Well first off to be completely honest no Christians today (I include myself in this) have seen Christ. And nobody alive today wrote the Bible or did anything like that so it's about the same.
Secondly you can quote a book you didn't write, can't you? Oscar Wilde is funny but by your logic I shouldn't be able to quote him if the right time comes.
Thirdly not all atheists are the same what you said is like trying to classify tall people.
Fourth what the hell makes you think atheists aren't curious? Not every atheist is a scientist, but not every theist is a priest.

Since when do atheists think they are the smartest people in the world? Additionally which science is it that atheists didn't participate in? You are not studying prior to questioning...It's good that you question, but it's not good to generalize when you can't substantiate the claim. FYI conciousness or lack there of play tricks on people and hence your out of body/near death experiences. We don't fully understand the various levels of conciousness to be able to explain these happenings scientifically.
FYI AGNOSTICS are the smartest in the world because without them humanity wouldn't make any progress...that's why it's good you question. PEACE!

I know many Atheists, myself included, and none of which have claimed to be the smartest in the world. In fact, many of the Atheists I have met are willing to listen to the beliefs of others. I, myself, find it interesting to hear why or what other people believe.
The ironic thing about this is, most christian people that I know are so quick to judge and are self-righteous, and the Atheists that I know are pretty much accepting. I find if very funny that Atheists are the most untrusted minority, yet how many cults have you heard of that kill many people that began with and Atheist? Oh, and we are one of the few minorities that have never started a war.

There are about 40 studies, conducted over the past 80 years, that reveal a statistically significant NEGATIVE correlation between intelligence and religiosity. In plainer language, they found that the more intelligent a person is, the LESS likely he is to be religious.
We're not entitled to conclude causality from these data, but there are three possibilities:
1.Considering religion important lowers measured IQ (unlikely, since IQ is substantially genetic whereas belief is not).
2.The causality is via other factors not considered, such as socio-economic conditions, cultural history, or physical environment (definitely possible).
3.Having a higher measured IQ lowers your likelihood of considering religion important (most likely).
If you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. Intelligence tests mainly provide an indication of reasoning ability and problem solving ability... critical thought. These are the very qualities that see through religion, and recognize it for what it is; i.e., religion cannot survive the glaring light of reason and critical thought. This was well understood by important figures in religious history. This is why the early church destroyed all the writings that were in conflict with dogma, such as Greek philosophical, medical and mathematical knowledge... all the good stuff... which led directly to the Dark Ages.
Just to illustrate the point, here's what Martin Luther, the 'father' of protestantism, had to say about it:
"Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed. Faith must trample underfoot all reason, sense, and understanding, and whatever it sees must be put out of sight and ... know nothing but the word of God." ~ Martin Luther
"Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but -- more frequently than not -- struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God." ~ Martin Luther
"There is on earth among all dangers no more dangerous thing than a richly endowed and adroit reason... Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed." ~ Martin Luther
"Reason should be destroyed in all Christians." ~ Martin Luther
Christianity is essentially a criminal business enterprise... in fact, it is the world's longest running and most successful Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) scam. The product they are selling is 'salvation'... and the 'pay plan' doesn't kick in until after you're dead. What a racket! FORTUNATELY, it only works on those who are gullible enough, and sufficiently lacking in critical thinking skills, to fall for it. UNfortunately, THAT accounts for about 75% of the population of the USA. (There are a lot more people who DON'T know how to think properly than there are people who DO know how to think properly.) That is why there are a lot more religious people in the USA than there are 'Free-thinkers'... including Atheists. Also, Christians are generally too dense to realize that proselytizing (spreading the 'good news') is a key element of the Christian MLM MARKETING PLAN, which was instituted after Christianity lost the political power that had previously allowed them to simply torture and kill anybody who did not comply. Now, they attempt to just pester people to death, through persistent obliviousness and obnoxiousness. If you stop to think about it, you will realize that Christians are very much like the Borg, on Star Trek Next Generation: "You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile." I would not be surprised to learn that thoughts of Christianity provided the 'creative spark' for the Borg concept.
Interestingly, statistics on supernatural beliefs count the USA on a par with backward, developing Third World nations, rather than among modern, advanced industrial powers.

"Businesses may come and go, but religion will last forever, for in no other endeavor does the consumer blame himself for product failure." ~ Harvard Lampoon, "Doon" (paraphrase)

try to see the average christian through their eyes. an atheist see what you say and what you do and the hypocrisy in it.
after rereading your question i wounder if you are trying to stir up trouble or if you are not good at wording questions
"The only logic and rational thing they ever quote is science that they themselves did not participate in."
and the Christians quote the bible. a book that says itself is the truth (circular reasoning)

Most atheists are just people like you and me. We just have some different beliefs. Doesn't mean that I am right and they are wrong. There are many intelligent people who post on here and they have a variety of beliefs.
Scientist will use science to explain near death and out of body. I believe like you do. There is also many stories of remembered past lives. I am fascinated by it all.

They do not think of them selves as the smartest people in the world, your judgment of them only defines yourself. It is really your intelligence that you your self question by this line of questioning. It does not take a scientist to observe the world around you and make rational choices about what you see. This is all they do, they simply take the skills that scientist use and apply it to their everyday life, there is really nothing wrong with this seeing how we all live in a physical universe and apply the inventions of science in our everyday life.

Atheists don't claim to be the smartest people on earth, just smarter than you. Although it is true that the knowledge comes from studies that others have done, there is also work in learning and understanding these theories. Every single one of these theorists and scientists out there read immense amounts of journal before preparing their own studies, and even now they keep up to date with other researchers journals for knowledge purposes.
Out of body experiences are found to also happen in drug users, specifically those that consume ketamine. Since we don't understand how consciousness works entirely, a clear reason for how a person can feel this is unknown.
Near death experiences have been discovered to work thanks to pilot training. The pilot training can get to an intensity in which the brain can't handle it and "passes out" violently. The person experiences the tunnel with the light at the end.

I'm an atheist and i don't think im any where near being the smartest person in the world. I know christians who could beat the crap out of me in an I.Q. test. And about your first sentence, Christians quote the bible and they didn't participate in any of the stuff in it.

I had a dream once, and I killed a person. That doesn't make me a killer. A dying person having a "vision" doesn't really mean much. I don't claim to be the smartest in the world, but crazy things happen to people's minds, it isn't evidence. Tone doesn't come through well on this thing but I'm really not trying to sound condescending, just disagreeing politely.
