Shiraz or Syrah is a variety of grape used in wine. The names are interchangeable, although the original nomenclature is Shiraz. It is called Syrah in France and most often in the United States. In South Africa, Australia, and Canada it is most commonly known as Shiraz. In Australia it used to be called Hermitage up to the late 1980s. It should not be confused with Petite Sirah, a synonym for durif. It got its name from Shiraz--the city of flowers, wine and poetry in Persia/Iran--in the heart of an ancient winemaking region.

A deep red wine made from grapes known as Syrah in Europe and Shiraz in the New World.
It is a strong fruity wine with a high tannin content that complements strongly flavoured foods - chilli, cheese, flavourful meaty pasta sauces etc.
It is not really a quaffable wine - or if you do beware the headache next day!"
A really good buy if you are a red wine fan.
There are some particularly good "Aussie" ones at present, which tend sometimes to be expensive, as the grapes are hand harvested from old vines, but there are also some real bargains to be had.
Enjoy you shiraz!
