Is it possible to prove that there is a God WITHOUT reference to the Bible? What arguments can people think of?
I ask this because everytime I mention the Bible, people seem to switch off, which makes any Christianity defence difficult.

I would like to add that there IS extensive debate on this, so it must be possible.

We are not to be 'defensive Christians'. We are ambassadors for Christ not defense attorneys! To 'prove God' without the bible is to manifest the power of God by healing the sick, casting out devils, raising the dead etc. It is STILL available to do these things.

The truth of God's word needs no defence. We are to speak the truth in love, not defend it with fear. If people don't want to beleive it that is their problem, ours is to speak it with boldness and confidence in God.

But because so many Christians do not know how to manifest the power of God then the word of God is made of no effect not only in their lives but in the lives of those around them.

Little wonder then that people have stopped listening. And why has this happened? Because people stopped believing God. They believe IN him but they simply don't beleive him.

So, you want people to accept that there is a God? First start beleiving him, second start trusting him and third, start operating his power.

And if you want to know more about how to get the power of God in your life, how to heal the sick and cast out devils, contact me and I will share it with you. It is no secret. It is free. And all it requires is beleiving.

Good question. Here's my take on the matter. I don't believe in the Bible, Torah, Koran, or any other book declaring itself to be the one and only proof of God's existence. Yet I believe in something. I call that something "God." I guess it comes down to your definition of God. The reason most Atheists (of which I was at one point in time) reject the idea of God, is because most of them can't see God in any other way than is depicted in the Bible. The biblical version of God is impossible to understand with a scientific mind. I know that you're trying to prove God to show the validity of the Bible, but I don't think that's possible.

First you have to think like an Atheist. Assume Evolution is a fact. Assume the universe was created in the big bang. Assume the earth has been around for about four and a half billion years. Assume the Bible was written by humans with no divine inspiration. When it comes down to it, it makes more sense to Atheists that there is no God. The universe follows certain laws of Physics that have allowed it to have the order that it appears to have.

But what most Atheists don't realize is that certain scientific principles, primarily at the sub atomic level, point more towards a unified consciousness which I call God, rather than away from it. When it comes down to it, energy can't be destroyed or created, only changed. Matter is made of energy. Before the big bang, before everything existed, there was a single energy which was neither positive, negative, or neutral. It was never created, and it can never be destroyed. It simply was, is, and always will be. This is where all of existence came from. This is God.

If you want proof of the validity of Christianity, or any religion for that matter, I can't give you that. There's truth to all religions. But there are also non-truths. Not necessarily lies, but just things that were believed without proof, or exaggerated, or mistranslated, or a number of other innocent truth distorting practices that have made the religions of the world just different enough to cause wars, inquisitions, witch burnings, crusades, and all the other negative things that go along with religion.

I suppose when you reach the proof of God that I propose, you can interpret the Bible to suggest that that's what the Bible meant all along the way that people have been doing for centuries whenever a scientific theory conflicts with the popular interpretation of the Bible. In fact you could do that with all religions and in a way I think all religions are correct, in that sense. A religion is a metaphor for existence. Not to be taken literally, but written in such a way so that the people of the time and place that it was written for could understand it.

Can you use this to prove without a doubt the existence of God? No, because there will always be a doubt. Anyone skeptical enough will find some hole in any theory that proves God, just like any creationist who refuses to believe in evolution will find some hole to point at despite the overwhelming amount of evidence that points towards evolution.

Re your extra comment - be careful. Just because there is a debate on something, that doesn't make it true. The result of the debate might end up as "we believe that it is NOT possible......".
The real issue is that there is neither evidence nor proof for the existence OR non-existence of any god, goddess, godling. It can only rely on "faith" which is:

• noun
1 complete trust or confidence.
2 strong belief in a religion.
3 a system of religious belief

OR "belief" which is :

• noun
a feeling that something exists or is true, especially one without proof.

The essential point about "belief" is the "without proof" issue. In the case of religion might read as "without proof OR evidence".

So, why do you want to defend xtianity? by its own definition, there's no evidence or proof. However, in other matters you'd require evidence and/or proof before accepting anything.
Religions are usually based on a book of so-called revelations, generally centuries old. who says that they are true? Ah, you've been told from an early age by both parents and priests. Hmmm, the word biased comes to mind. Centuries of parents and priests all saying the same things, from a time when almost everything had to be considered "a work of God" simply because there was no scientific study available. Over the centuries, more and more has been explained by science. For example, once, people thought rain came when God opened the windows of heaven. Now we understand that it's just water vapour rising, cooling, condensing and falling again - no godly intervention needed.
It's probable that within the next 50 years, we shall be able to create life itself. Only 50 years ago (when I was in junior school), we were told that making life was the exclusive preserve of god. Even the idea of say a heart transplant was regarded as against god's law, something blasphemous and therefore never to be done by man. And that was only 10 years before the first heart transplant. Today, it's almost an everyday occurence.
As a result, your attempt to defend xtianity is doomed to failure. If the people concerned are of another faith, their belief in the correctness of their religion may well be as strong or stronger than your belief in yours. In the case of an atheist however, he or she may well see the fallacies of your arguments and just ignore the defence anyway. Presumably, if they defend atheism more efficiently, you'll convert to that as well.

No arguments or proof that satisfy a burnt out old atheist like me! But people have tried. Most arguments are from personal credulity 'I beleive there must be something bigger than us'
or personal incredulity 'I can't beleive it all happened by chance' - this latter has several more sophisticated forms, like people who point to the complexity of some natural forms and proclaim that there much be a creator - this is the 'watch on the heath' argument, initiated by a victorian theist called Pailey. (If you found a pocket watch on a heath you would deduce the existance of a watchmaker)
The 'intelligent design' argument is a variant on the God of the Gaps fallacy - essentially, 'Science can not explain how this happened, so it must be proof of god's activity'
The problem with this, as some christians, including I think the archbishop of cantebury, have pointed out, is that with evey new scientific discovery god is diminished, rather than glorified.
A major proponent of this 'God of the gaps' idea, is a biochemist calle Behe. He pointed to certain biological structures, such as the prion pump or the flagella of bacteria, and said 'There is no way evolution can explain this, because it is ireducuibly complex, all the parts must be in place for it to work, therefore it can not have evolved from a simpler version, therefore, there must be an intelligent designer, ergo, god.
However, Behe has been thoroughly debunked by mainsteam biologist, They have sucessfully demonstrated how all his examples could have evolved, thus smashing his arguments. This of course has not stoped Xtians using this argument extensively.
Then there is the 'Ontelogical argument', which seems just silly to me - god must exist because we can't imagine anything greater!
Then there is the anthropological universe idea - that our universe seems constructed to favour human life, again, this evaporated when you just think about it. We're here because we're here because we're here!
Finally, one argument I have heard is based on morality, and it seems the dodgiest of all to me - there must be a god because without god humans are incapable of living moral lives. yeah!

So I'm afraid most Xtains fall back on the heavily edited, selected and badly translated collection of bronze age myths and Essene mysticism they call the bible. God exists because it says so here....etc etc ad nauseum

I use a comparative argument. Take the very beginning how did life begin from lifelessness? If life started from a flash of lightening in a chemical laden pool of water, in a planetary atmosphere of methane ans ammonia has science say it was. How did it survive? what feed it a plant need some sort of biologic material to survive. Why can't such a process be repeated by the brilliant men that tell us how it happened? If it happened by accident why can't we make in happen by design? The whole idea of chaos becoming organized goes against nature it's self. Organization tends to move toward chaos not the other way around.. There are things that can show that the christian beliefs are not silliness... Jim

Just keep asking the question "Where did that come from?" and you'll find that you will reach to a point where there will be no answer. At that point look up at the blue sky and smile! You'll find your answer, you'll find god!

How else can you explain everythign around you, come on do you really think all this was just by chance. Even to trigger a chance you need something. It didnt such pop out of thin air.

How you precieve god is however another question, which different religion answer for you. Which one is true? Yes you guess it...God Knows?

There is no proof that God does exist, the only evidence is the faith of the people, and their own knowledge of God, I know he exist because I can feel him around me, I see what he can do, and have a fair idea why he does the things he does. the bible is just a story book written by a man to control the people, taking God's words and in some cases using his name to kill, and profit. But there is much truth in the bible, but it has been poorly translated, and much of it understood by the written at the time. if you read you will see that many of them find it hard to agree on what happened with Jesus, but if you want to know more then read the Hebrew text, before it was translated, you will have a few surprises. Just remember religion is man made, and thats fact, so forget it what you must have is faith in God, not man.

Love & Peace

I want to commend you for your honest desire to know the truth about God. Down inside, you sense there must be more to life than you know right now, and you aren't content to ignore it. Perhaps Jesus had people like you in mind when He said, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7).

No, you can't put God in a test tube and "prove" He exists the same way you can prove a chemical exists (although nature's laws bear witness to His wisdom and power). But that doesn't mean faith is an illogical leap in the dark (as some have suggested). The reason is because God wants us to know Him—and He has made this possible by revealing Himself to us.

How did He do this? He did it in a way that staggers my imagination: He became a man! Do you want to know what God is like? Look at Jesus Christ, because He was God in human flesh. If you have never done so, read carefully through one of the Gospels (such as John). As you do, ask God to show Himself to you as you discover Jesus for yourself.

Then don't be afraid to commit yourself to Him. There are many outstanding scientists who are also strong believers in Christ. My prayer is that you will.

Prove it to who?

I believe in God, but don't follow the Christian or Jewish Bible. So do many other religions. So, the Bible is not required for there to be belief in the divine, in whatever form or by whatever name.

So, can it be proven to those who have experienced the divine? Sure.

Can it be proven to those who have not? No, but there is always the option of belief through faith.

It is not possible to PROVE that there is a God. However, he did say that we are without excuse to justify our lack of belief in him, because of the beauty of creation. Look at a beautiful sunset, landscape etc, and explain what is so beautiful about a rationalised purely physical set of chemicals and wave lengths. The reason we feel beauty / love etc is because we are far greater than just the purely measurable scientific universe. To suggest that is all there is, is to go round with only one eye open.
