I suspect there is a lot more to it than the public are aware of. A bit of research on the Boer war that ended in South Africa about 12 years earlier, may shed some light.
It might help to read about Germany's economic and industrial progress after the industrial revolution too.

The truth will emerge eventually.

I'm sure you're tired of moronic answers from ignorant fools, I know I am. You are more than welcome to send me some of your poems as I have studied and researched The Great War poets such as Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke, Humbert Wolfe,...et al.

The only drawback I can see here, is that the fore-mentioned poets had first-hand experience of the horrors of life in the trenches. I assuming you weren't there, however that's not a prerequisite for good literary prose and verse.
