At first it is best to run on a track. What you do at first is to run the straightaways and walk the curves for whatever distance you feel comfortable with. As you progress you will be able to run laps and take a breather by walking curves ocassionally until you no longer need to walk the curves. Once that is accomplished you can take your running wherever your heart desires as far as locations.

When I was a boy in Boy's Scouts they taught us to run for 50 steps then walk for 50 steps that way you won't get tired and can go a lot farther.

Try run/walk. Run for 1/4 mile, walk for 1/4 mile ... repeat.

i just started running and i'm learning how to breathe better while i run...breathe thru your nose and let it out slowly thru your mouth...and don't think about finishing...just think about your posture as you run and concentrate on your breathing..that helps me...
good luck and congrats on picking up running!
