A smallish mutt. Mutt's aren't (usually) high strung like their purebred counterparts.

Sorry, I am anti-dog buying. I have seen too many dogs abandoned. I would never ever buy one.

I have a Pug and am absolutely in love with him. He is the sweetest small breed dog I have ever encountered. Pugs do tend to have respiratory problems the older they get, though, because of their squashed noses... so that is something to keep in mind about them. They are not low maintenance animals.

Good luck finding a puppy!

Boston Terriers - some are a little hyper but if you pick them carefully they are VERY lovable. They love to run and play but are content to sit and cuddle as well. One trait they tend to have is to snore when they sleep. Pretty funny! I would very much like to get one again. Look at www.akc.org for breed standards. Purebred Bostons should have specific markings. I am sure you will be very pleased if you decide to buy a Boston!! If money is not a problem you can find miniature Bostons online. The miniatures can be quite spendy,

WE HAVE A DACHSHUND THEY ARE VERY SWEET DOGS, BUT CAN BE A LITTLE STUBBORN WHEN IT COMES TO THE POTTY TRAINING ISSUE. I GAVE A WHITE PEKINGESE TO A FAMILY MEMBER AND HE IS THE SWEETEST THING. IT REALLY JUST DEPENDS ON YOU. HOW MUCH TIME YOU WILL HAVE TO DEVOTE TO IT. IF IT WILL BE HOME A LOT ALONE. DIFFERENT BREEDS HANDLE THESE THINGS VERY DIFFERENTLY. SOME BREEDS OF DOGS WILL GET VERY AGITATED IF THEY ARE HOME ALONE AND MIGHT TEAR YOUR HOUSE APART. OTHERS ARE FINE JUST ON THERE OWN A LOT OF THE TIME. SO THAT IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING YOU PROBABLY WOULD WANT TO CHECK INTO. GOOD LUCK.

Why don't you stop expecting ppl to give unbias opinions on which dogs are the sweetest? I've had MANY breeds of dogs, and they've all been sweet. Large or small. It depends on the dog and the owner, not the breed. Good luck :)

I had a beagle for 2 days and gave her to my friend, because of probably the same reason you don't like them. LOL. But I now have 2 Yorkshire Terriers, they are awesome! Very lovable and great lap (not hyper at all, they are kick it dogs) dogs.

My grandmother had a maltese, and she was a great family dog!

I recommend checking your local shelter and rescues for a smaller dog that is good with kids. You get a wonderful dog, and save an animals life. Win/Win!

get a toy or miniture poodle. Not only are they famously even tempered, but very easily trained and extremly affectionate. You don't have to get him that stupid poodle haircut. my poodle is a little love bug and i have 20 housemates. They also don't have the same agression as a lot of dogs their size. you need to train him properly. don't let him nip at your fingers or jump up

Pugs are widely known as fantastic cuddle dogs, they love attention and being with people. They are also great in apts b/c they aren't rambunctious like a lab or a golden retriever. But you do have to keep in mind they are sensitive to heat/cold, need to live indoors only and can have breathing problems if you run with them. I love them to death, and absolutely recommend them, if you can take care of their little quirks :)
