If it against the law here in the uk for ordinary people to use mobile phones whilst driving, how come the police can use theirs, can we report them.
I have seen this a lot of times, can they not pull over the same as we have to or are they above the law, for urgent calls they have their normal radios, so whats the reason ?

They should lead by example so no, they should not be able to use mobile telephones while driving.

The police are not above the law. They have to obay all the rules and regulations with regard driving. In an emergency, they can take a red traffic light as proceed with caution, but not endanger other road users, including pedestrians. All police vehicles, to the best of my knowledge, are equipped with hands free communications, or a second officer as passenger to act as navigator via phone links. There should be no reason for any police officer to use a mobile phone while driving.

They are not part of the law, they are part of the taxation system. If they were allowed to be part of the law, they would also become part of the community. This they will never be. A soldier sees the enemy as a fabricated name, "****, Gerry, Frog, Spook, Mark, customer." The police do the same, as do airline personel, shop workers and almost everyone else. The Mafia and the police are cousins, close ones. It's all about how to maximise profits with the least work. Speed cameras! anyone love them? The police are there to get money from the motorists, try telling them you have been robbed, mugged, burgled, beaten up. abused, bullied, killed, conned out of your life savings! Psychologicaly abused by your wife? Or anything that is not motorist related. Bring back Dick Turpin, he had a soul. Tony in remotest Indo-China.

I can't speak for the UK but in the US it is not uncommom for very important policed calls to come in on thier cell phones.

Often if there information about a suspect, or a crime in process that they don't want every bad guy or every nut with a police scanner to hear they will call it in on thier cell phones.

We often used them if we were dealing with minors where we are not allowed to give thier info out publicly. So I would say that you are not sure what they are doing or what the department policy is.

So why do you care, they risk alot to protect us, how about telling them thank you for what they do, not complaining about where they park, or what cell phone they use and so onl

Police cars are equiped with the right equipment there is no need for them to use cell phones. If a cell phone is used the navigator or second policeman who is not driving can use the phone. Policemen always patrol in pairs or more so there is no reason for the driver to break any road rules.

Of course not. the hand held Police radios are much safer than mobile phones because you do not have to dial and you cannot do texts on them.

It is dialling and texting that causes accidents.

Personally I find it a nuisance trying to do emails on my laptop when driving but since I am too stupid to get a hands free kit I see no alternative.

That is a really stupid law, you dont need both hands to drive, what is it going to be illigal to have manual transmition because you dont drive as well as you could. I always talk on my cell phone and drive. Its like having a passenger, sometimes I use the headset.

If you believe all the stuff about it lowering response times and such, absoloutley not. Specially trained drivers mabye, but there are specially trained civillian drivers also.

so................NO, they shouldn't

you should ask the family of the next person they cut in half with their police cars due to poor driving or a lack of attention.

Well I am not sure. It should be as right as the pope being allowed to become a bigamist, or for the KKK to be given government funds to support cross burning in black peoples yards.
