I would like to find a study group or a website that can explain the bible. I wouldn't like the study group to be religious at all. I want to study the bible as a "historical" book not a book of religion, explaining all the aspects of the bible. Do these websites or study groups exist? If so can some one please give me a reference so I can start educating myself?

I pray and believe in God. This isn't a question of faith. I just want a good place to study the Bible and it's historic facts.

I have read the Bible--I don't understand parts of it. I don't understand the contrictions. I have gone to several Bible study classes provided through several churches with all different denomonations. I want to just study the facts now.

A 'Bible Study" traditionally seeks the spiritual applications of its message. If you want to study the book as history, you'd need to turn to works on archaeology, sociology, and historical development. Scholars who work in this field without any religious faith (or being against it) generally have different methods of interpreting the historical record and the text. They generally give different dates or ascribe certain books to different (and multiple) authors. They also deny certain events. Scholars who are believers have their own methodology, giving greater emphasis to what the text says (rather than using another narrative to interpret the Bible).

I guess it depends on what you are looking to get out of it. To try and seperate the bible in regards to religion vs historical reference is a misnomer because you need the theological understanding to put the historical references in perspective. I would suggest http://www.carm.org or http://www.answersingenesis.org I hope these help but my thoughts are you may be looking for a more secular historical view on the bible, and I could be wrong and am happy to admit it, but if that is the case then I would think you would be a terrible disservice to both the bible and yourself.

IMHO, I think it would be very hard to study the Bible over the internet. I'd suggest going to a church nearby and asking them for information on current Bible study classes they know of...

The bible is God's word you can't ever really understand the truths of it unless you have a relationship with Him not religon which is man made but relationship which is from God. History could never tell the full truth because man deinies the power of God

There is a Christian Theology college where I live. They teach comparative religion classes, and classes on the history of the Bible-wheres, whys, and scientific reasoning. Is there such a school in your area? I think the classes sound interesting.

The Teaching Company has a great lecture series on CD. I've listened to the one on the new testament and it was fantastic. They have one on the OT as well... It's as if you are attending a college class on the subject. Highly recommended for what you are interested in learning.

You could try local community colleges for that info, alot of times they have short classes for this type of history. My Friend is taking old testament class and says that it is not at all from a religious point at all.
