I have chronic canker sores right now. About 12-15 in my mouth and throat) (if it sounds painful, it is.

I was wondering if, for any other people who occasionally experience this, if having this many can cause other systems, like being run down, getting some cold like symptoms, runny nose, etc.

Or do you think they are coincidental?

I know canker sores are a virus, and when there are many it affects your immune system, so it makes sense to me that it would. But this is just my stipulation.

Does anyone know for sure whether this is the case?

If anyone knows

Cold sores, (fever blisters) are caused by the herpes virus. But canker sores are not. Heredity, certain foods, and stress are associated with canker sores. Trying to medicate a canker sore is a difficult task since nothing sticks well to the skin inside your mouth. You need a product that has peroxide and glycerin. The peroxide helps with the bacteria and the glycerine puts a protective coating on the sores. Brand names include Glyoxide, Amosan or Cankaid. I recommended this to another person who asked about canker sores and he let me know it worked.

Canker sores are from the herpes simplex virus and most likely you will have this chronically. Certain things can bring them on, such as nuts, some acidy foods like citrus, stress, too much sun, an upset stomach from some hot or spicy food. You need to find the culprits that bring them on and avoid those things in the future. To treat them I have found that Lactinex works well although they will take about a week to go away no matter what. You can buy Lactinex over the counter. It is in the refrigerator behind the pharmacists counter. Just go up to the pharmacy and ask for them. It is in a little plastic bottle with a green label. It runs about $8.00 for the little bottle and you may need to use two bottles, if you have a lot of them. Try one bottle first and see if that gives you relief. You chew 4 tablets 4 times per day. It is lactobacillus acidophilus a naturally ocurring flora of the intestinal tract. Good luck!

Oh my. You get them terribly. You really should ask your Doctor about this. I get one or two every once in awhile . I have never heard they were a virus..I thought it was from overendulging in some particular food.

At Christmas time when my mother bakes millions of yummy things..I always pig out too much and land up with a canker sore..geeee that bugs me. It's like natures way of yelling "knock it off"..hmmmm , so I stop eating the delightful stuff and drink mega amounts of water and voila..in a couple of days I'm good as gold..:)

No idea. But it makes sense that your other systems are not functioning properly. Try taking spirullina and Colostrum. It builds your immune system.
Peace.

Yah, you're right. You're basically having a herpes simplex 2 outbreak. Sorry to sound gross but, you should get on some meds for that if it bothers you. Your body is realizing the infection your symptoms (just like allergies) are trying to get rid of it. It is also contagious as hell and if you give any one oral sex, they can develop herpes simplex 1.
