There could be many reason making your dog's leg swell: a torn ligament, broken bone, pulled tendon, sprain, ......

Take him to your veterinarian to diagnose the problem and get the correct treatment.

For now, you can make the swelling go down with an epsom salt soak. Mix about 1 cup of the salt with 3 gallons of hot water. Wait for it cool and put your dog's leg in it for at least 15 minutes. Epsom salt is available a the drug store and most super markets.

If your dog won't hold still for the soak, you can do a poultice wrap. You have to buy poultice froma feed or tack store, it will be more costly than the epsom soak. You put the poultice on the dog's leg in a very thick coat. Then wrap it up in syran wrap or prastic wrap. Leave the wrap on for 15 minutes, take it off, and wash off the excess poultice (it will be partly dried).

As far as your dog not whining or whimpering, it isn't really an indicator of anything. Some dog's have a high pain tolerance and most dog's don't wine about everything like people do:-)

Definetly have your veterinarian look at your dog.

Good Luck.

When a limb swells... there's nothing you can do to treat it safely at home. Mainly, because you don't know the cause of the swelling. The possibilities are endless... broken bone, torn ligament or tendon, dislocation, etc
This is not something to play with... get the dog to the Vet for Xray and diagnosis. The longer you wait the costlier and more dangerous it will be as untreated breaks or dislocations that go without being treated often end up as amputations.

I don't want to scare you but... these are the facts.

Oh, and by the way, some dogs have a really high tolerance for pain and don't whine. An Afghan Hound of mine broke her leg in 3 places without a whimper!

Hope I helped and good luck!

If you must use home remedies try ice for 15min. out of every hour for 6 hrs. and give dog ibuprofen to reduce swelling.after 6hrs. ice 15mins. every two hrs. for about 2 days. The dog will not be smart enough to know not to play if he is taking pain killers so he might hurt himself more while not totally recovered.
I really suggest x-rays and vet visit though

I would take him to the vet. Dogs, especially larger dogs can tear their tendons easily.
