I have no seen the movie yet, but I was fortunate to see the musical when it first came out, about 10 years ago, when the actors who were in the movie did the stage show.
It is true that the musical, RENT, is based on the opera La Boheme, which I have yet to see (and would love to see it, given the chance).
I found the musical to be very moving, especially given the context of it when it first came out. There wasn't nearly the same ammount of fear surrounding AIDS as in the 80s, but it was still a very scary time. I think that added greatly to the impact of the show at that time. The cast was absolutely fantastic, and my friends and I were all very moved by the show.
I highly recommend seeing it live, if you have the opportunity.

Are you kidding? The play was exponentially better than the movie, because of course, people who see movies need more hand-holding than people who see plays, apparently. Seems that the characters feel more developed on stage, and you simply can't beat the music and action being LIVE. If you ever get the chance, see the play. Seriously. It is my all-time favorite, and I'm quite the live musical theater sucker!

The stage version is amazing. Such a deep, powerful, moving storyline. Saw it twice in London, but 5 times when it came touring to Edinburgh. From the moment when that main person (for people who haven't see it yet) dies I was in tears from then on. Such a moving piece of theatre. Great! (although the film was good too, much better live)

The play is better than the movie, more songs and VERY powerful. You can catch it on tour, but, the Broadway version is the best.

First, it ain't no play. It's a musical and it's derivative from the opera La Boheme. I think that are only ten musicals worth seeing and that isn't one of them.

I saw it in Toronto years ago -- I didn't think it was very well done. The soundtrack CD was great, but visually there wasn't much to it.
