There must be a reason for this.

i'm a fairly new soldier. in basic we had 22 people go AWOL. in ait we had 14 (of those 2 were prior service). both companies had about 200 soldiers in them. in training it's because it's hard to transition from civilians to soldiers in just a matter of weeks for some people. they wanted to continue civilian lifestyles and in the army you just can't do that. but here @ my duty station i haven't heard of anyone going AWOL. they probably want to take a little extra time off or something but when they do decide to come back they're afraid of the repercussions so they stay gone. hell, with a first sergeant like mine i'd be.

Anti War, firstly, there are not more AWOL cases in the military when compared to the past or any other profession, but to answer your question, soldiers go AWOL for the same reason civilians "quit" jobs they:
A. Want something better.
B. Do not like the regimented lifestyle.
C. Are unable to accept the forfeiture of some personal liberties.
D. Get into trouble and run on home.

I have only heard of one, So show me your sources and proof. Because I don't believe it. We have an all volunteer Military they no what they are getting into. If there was a draft then maybe more would be AWOL. Get your facts straight....

i really dont think that there are more or less than the norm....its just that as this time it becomes of more importance / the media makes more of it........................

Although it would be interesting to actually find out IF the numbers are really higher or lower but some how dont think that these figures would be available to public knowledge or scrutiny.

The ones [military people] that I feel very sorry for are the ones that have served over there and after less than 6 months home are told they are going back again, and then they crack............do you think that is an easy option for them?? Absolutely not, the risk losing pretty much every thing be it benefits and or respect from their fellow comrades...............anyone that makes that choice AFTER being there really needs help and support NOT hate from their community. because they are idiots and they are cowards. the consequences is far worse than their stupid decision. you are considered a felon and jail time. they are considered the lower than dirt. in this country once employers finds out that you've been dishonorably discharge they won't even look at you twice. instead of going AWOL, most of them just finish they're contract and get out.

this always happerns in times of war. young soldiers/sailors/airmen freak out by the fact tht they could be going to a combat area and possibly die, and they run from their "problem".

Why don't you enlist and then you can ask these brave men and women this question in person. No? Didn't think so.
