I've lived in Kauai, all the major hotel chains are there, so you really can't go wrong with choices.

Poipu is in the south where it's usually sunny. Princeville is nice if you have a lot of money, in October it will be raining so most avoid north shore at that time. The east side there's some older hotels, the now closed Coco Palms is there (Elvis film Blue Hawaii wedding scene there). More choice of restaurants on east side.

You might also checkout the B&B's there. They range from working ranches/farms to million dollar mansions with private lagoons/beach access.

My husband and I just bought a Marriott timeshare on Kauai. It is Waiohai at Po' Ipu Beach. It is supposedly the best beach on the island, it is gorgeous. We did stay at the other Marriott which was also right on a beach kind of in a bay, Marriott Kauai Resort, which was real nice, but the rooms were not as we expected.

Whatever you do, make sure that you go to the canyon~ drive as far as you can and then hike the road~~ absolutely gorgeous.

Have a wonderful time~~ we are definitely jealous!!! Just relax and enjoy!

Check for vacation rentals on greatrentals.com. Look for 1 near the beach. Be sure to check out Lumahai Beach where Elvis was in "Blue Hawaii", Waimea Canyon (the little grand canyon) and the 2 national botanical gardens.
