Apply to your local Police or Sheriff's department. There is no charge to do that, and if your accepted you will be put through their academy with no charge to you.

You may also find an investigator that can do a background search similar to what Law enforcement does before they hire individuals. Would have to search a phone book and make some calls to find one that would be able to perform that background check.

Easiest way I have found, just apply to your local P.D. or Sheriff's Department. You can speak to your Background Investigator about your previous incidents, and they can tell you whether you would be a good candidate or not.

You can go to your local police or the state police and fill out a form for a criminal records check. For a small fee they will give you a printout. The academy admissions office should be able to tell you if there is anything on your record that would keep you from getting hired. Some offenses are automatic dis-qualifiers while some lesser charges are up to the discretion of the individual agency. Keep in mind that multiple lesser charges are just as bad as one serious one. The academy can't tell you what a specific department may do about these lesser offenses but if you have a particular agency in mind you could contact them first and ask.

In Texas, the minimum laws for becoming a police officer are set by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. Each department may have their own rules which are stricter but not less than the state minimum.

Also, in Texas, you can go to the academy at your own expense and on your on time. You do not need to already be hired by any agency to do this.

Which means that the easiest way to find out if you are eligible to become a police officer is to ask one of the academies if you can attend. Just remember that them allowing you to attedn does not mean you will ever get hired anywhere.

Also, for a look at the actual minimums set by the state, go to the web site below and read the licensing qualifications.

Ok, you did not say where you live, but here in TN and GA you apply and get hired by a department and then they pay you a salary and pay for your academy.

If you don't have any felonies, what do you have, be more specific and we can be more specific.

But there are about 200 applicants for every one job opening in the bigger departments, So start looking at the county sheriff offices, at small town police departments, or even college police departments. You may be looking at lower pay to start and less benifits but you can get certified and start working on the job.

Also be willing to move to where some department will hire you,

Your local government and police agecies should have all that information on their websites so I would just search them. I know my county had all the qualifications and eligibility requirements on their website when my boyfriends step dad wanted to become one.
