I know of the crate traning procedure, but I have to leave him alone for 10 hrs a day and dont think its healthy to keep him caged for that long. I think this will make him depressed, but it is very hard to train him. What should I do?

I close off the kitchen area while I am gone and he has lots of toys. He does go on his pads during that time. I dont think he needs a sitter, just maybe another puppy to play with.

first of all 11 months is awfully young still, some puppies do not housebreak until they are around five months. second, if the dog has to be left alone for ten hours a day, you need to find him another home. try fish next time you desire a pet

yeah, there's a good idea, you can't take care of one, let's go out and get another

You really should have looked into what type of breed you were getting. Dachshunds are a very difficult dog to potty train in the first place. They also are quite active and need room to get out a play. They wouldn't do well in a crate all day, nor do I think any dog really would. It really is going to be hard for you to be a good dog care taker if you have no time to devote to it. As much as you may have wanted a dog, it really doesn't sound like you were ready for one. I know how hard it is to pass up that cute puppy, but they deserve your time and love. Good luck though.

I know how you feel, but you're right, leaving him in a crate 10 hours a day is not a good idea. i think what you really need to do is take a week off, just you and your puppy. first of all, 11 weeks old is too young to even attempt potty training. that needs to occur at around 14 weeks at minimum, and even that is too young for some dogs, especially little ones.

I have my dog litterbox trained which worked perfectly for me and my lifestyle. it allows the dog to go when he needs to, and not
have to wait for me to get out of a class.

The first thing you need to do is confine your dog when you're not home. Leaving a dog in a crate for 10 hours without a bathroom brake is cruel. but a playpen or excercise pen from petco might be a viable alternative? at one end of the playpen should be his crate, his food and his water. at the other end, his litterbox. I use this grate that is like Wizdog, but cheaper(40 dollars for a plastic grate? come on! I'll leave you a link for it.

Feed your puppy in the morning. then lock him in his crate for an hour. instead of taking him outside, pick him up, place him on the grate, or litterbox, or whatever method you decide to use, and say the words go potty. he won't know what that means yet, but he should pick up on it quickly. I remember the i was playing with my puppy one day and he jumped over me and went to his litterbox to go after only 3 days. Now i leave his crate door open and he uses his grate whenever he has to go. You can use one of those house training sprays to encourage him to use it, which you can get at petco.

The most important thing to remember is that just because a dog will go in a litterbox does NOT mean you can skip walking him. dogs need excercise.

you can't have a puppy and expect him to train himself!

you need to have someone care for him to reinforce all of the training methods. Crate training doesn't mean leave him in a crate for 10 hours! it mean put him in at night, take him out every 2-3 hours in the night, just like a baby wakes up, feed him in the morning, take him outside, wait with him until he "goes", bring him in, keep him with you--maybe teather him to your side with a leash, so you can watch him, if you notice that the's searching for a place to "go" you can hurry him to the designated potty place. PetsMart sells a pretty great book, for only $5, and it is free when you attend thier $15 puppy training seminar.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you EXPECT this puppy to train himself--and certainly don't punnish him because you don't have the time.

First, you CANNOT keep a puppy alone for 10hrs in a cage! No dog, no matter how old, should be left more than 8 hrs. Inactivity can cause numerous problems including self-mutilation, depression, constipation, and absolutely NO housetraining. You need to address the problem of the puppy getting cared for correctly before addressing any housebreaking issues. No dog can be housebroken if they are allowed to go "potty" in their crate because they cannot hold it any longer. Get a puppysitter or take him to doggie daycare if you cannot bring yourself to get him a better home.

Try to close off a room or get a dogie door put in. Dachshunds are very hard to potty train. Be consistent with your training. Sometimes you have to take time off work like a vacation. Spending time with your puppy the first few weeks is very important.

If your puppy is in a comfortable environment while you are gone leave him a little water...maybe a pint and a little food ...as soon as you get home take him outside and play with him. Feed him pretty good also good water and just stay with him outside until he goes potty. Then praise him and pet him and tell him he is a good boy and both of you go inside. Every time you are home for long periods of time feed and water him then wait about 10 minutes and go outside with him until he goes to potty. Don't make it like a chore just hang out with him and soon enough he will want to wait on you to go with him outside.

Sassilass_99 is completely and totally wrong!!! I agree with Sarah H. Depression hurts. And you can have your carpets cleaned. Try taking him to a doggy daycare. And for when he's home with you, get some training pads or training spray for your house. Spray it all over your floor. Eventually he will learn to wait for you to take him outside. For the first few months, watch him constantly. Take him out frequently. Then he will get it. "Hey, I'm supposed to pee out here." If he just doesn't get it after several months, get a fenced in area and a dog house and he can live outside.
