i have a very close cousin who is 19 and is in the US army.i am 21 and in college.we both come from a very strict asian oriental family.he just got a tattoo and his parents dont care much, and my parents would not tolerate that kind of stuff.i wanted a tattoo also,i am not jealous but i am very upset with myself.reason is: basically he lives on his own now and away from home, can do whatever he wants.i am going to college, dont work, live with parents at 21,need their financial support.so it is hard for me to get a tattoo, unless i want to get kicked out of house.of course i can get one on the back or upper arm, i mean who will see it?but should i risk it?also i am upset with myself, because i have always been like an older brother to my younger cousin, but he gets to do everything before me.he smoked weed for the first time before me,lost virginity before me,and now get a tattoo before i do.this is very frustrating for me,should i have a reason to be mad?what should i do?get a tattoo or not?

You should not get a tatoo soley based on the reason that your cousin gets everything before you do. If your parents are financially supporting you then you should respect their wishes while you are living in their home. If you really want a tatoo, you will still want it when you get out of college.

You should be proud of yourself that you are in school. Getting your education is an honorable thing to do. It's okay that you are not living on your own yet - don't be in such a rush. Finish your schooling and go at your own pace - no one elses (including your cousin).

Just because you 2 have different accomplishments and accomplish certain things at different times does not mean that either one of you is better than the other. You live your life for you - no one else...at your pace - no one elses.

If I were you, I would respect my parents and wait to get the tatoo. Like I said, if it is something you really want, you will still want it when you get out of school and the wait will make it that much better and more special.

Good luck!

Only get a tattoo if it is something that has really strong meaning for you. My fiance has two large tattoos that he got when he was 18. They still hold meaning to him and he will never regret them because they represent a way of life for him (not military). He has friends, though, who have a lot of tattoos, who regret that they ever got them, let alone paid a lot for them. If you are just getting some random thing that has no meaning just because you want a tattoo, don't do it. You will regret it later (I PROMISE).

Regarding your cousin. Once you graduate college, you will be much better off than he is, being on his own now at 19. Keep focused, do well in school, get a good job and then do whatever you want. You are lucky that you are able to stay at home while you attend college. Take advantage of that. Oh, and if you do get a tattoo somewhere that you think will be hidden by your clothes, your parents may still find out because for the first few days they ooze a lot and that will show through your clothes. Just a note.

A tattoo is forever. It should have a significant meaning to you, maybe reflect who you are, someone you lost or a symbol of who you once were but it should not be done just because he got one.
I loved my tattoo for maybe the first 5 or 6 years but now that I am moving up the corporate ladder I regret it.
If you decided to get one just make sure it has some real meaning for you not just because you feel jealous.

Your 21 do what you want. If your parents kick you out that will just be more freedom for you. They will control you as long as you let them,as far as getting it,don't do it unless you really know what you want and where you want it at. And definatly don't get it if your only doing it because your cousin got one. Be happy for all he's done and just because hes' done somethings first doesn't mean he does them better!!

You ARE jealous! Admit it! So he did something illegal borefore you...so he did something immoral before you...so he got himself mutilated before you....big deal! Not a bunch of things to be proud of. Here's an idea...why don't you grow up before him? Why don't you get the better job before him? Why don't you live the better life before him? Why don't you make the better choice before him?
