Not safe, you are better off to just eat in moderation and limit sugar and fats. Depriving yourself of carbs is not healthy, and that is way too much protein. Diets dont work, you need whole lifestyle changes.
Best of Luck

OMG! What a bunch of morans and sheep! First off Atkins did not die from a heart attack he died from hitting his head when he slipped on ice and fell into a coma. At 72! Get your facts straight!.
Secondly, the Atkins diet has been around since 1972 when he first published it. Where are the millions of law suits claiming heart attacks? Only one I am aware and that idiot ate cheese cake everyday and was on induction all the time. He hasn't won so far and he filed like three years ago.
Atkins, or almost any low-carb plan, with the possible exception of South Beach, are all healthy permanent eating changes. They are not hit and run THEY ARE FOREVER.
I have heard of disease caused by lack of proteins and lacks of fats but I have yet to hear of ANY disease caused by lack of carbs. Get a clue people. EXCESS CARBS MAKE YOU FAT.
When you eat meat with all the fat and veggies you will eat much less, because the FAT FILLS you FASTER and LONGER... YOU EAT LESS, YOU LOSE WEIGHT. Its a no-brainer. Without excess carbs your insulin does not yo-yo back and forth making you hungry and causing other problems. If you eat fresh food and cook your own food and avoid franken foods, you will be healthier then your friends here. Atkins and other low-carb plans give you more fresh veggies and fruit then what the Standard American Diet (SAD) gives you. IT IS NOT AN ALL MEAT ALL FAT DIET.
Go to the new FDA food pyramid. At the very top its says, "use fats, oils and sweets sparingling" then at the bottom it recommends 6 to 11 servings of grains a day!!
Did anyone inform the FDA that grains convert to glucose in the body? What is glucose? SUGAR! DUHHH!
Atkins is VERY SAFE... and VERY SANE. Do your own research. Don't rely on these yahoos, not even me, to give you right answers.

Safer than the previous answerer suggested.
Like any "diet", it should be followed for a short time only, not forever, and the low-carb thing is nonsense, way too extreme.
You might find a modified Atkins diet helpful in conjunction with a good exercise regime.
Try a simple test and see. Bacon and eggs for breakfast every day for a week, and weigh yourself before you start and at the end of the week. The next week, eat your normal breakfast, and compare the results...
Eat normally at other times.
When I did this I found I ate less during the day, and lost weight.
Switching back to muesli for breakfast resulted in me snacking more during the day.

Not safe. Atkins diet cuts out carbs, right? The reason your body loses weight is because it is being deprived of something. Not good.
Ant g has apparently never had a weight problem.

It's not safe at all. I've had my wife Gloria on it for about a year and she's still as dangerous as she ever was. If I didn't keep her under lock and key in the basement I think she'd take a saucepan to my head.
I'm going to go the whole hog and put her on a bread and water diet next. Maybe then she'll calm down and get back on the treadmill so i can have electricity again.

I don't think Atkins is dangerous in the short term but it's really hard to follow. The South Beach diet is similar in carb restriction but much more balanced. My doctor recommended it to me.

Atkins would be fine if it wasn't for all the saturated fat. Southbeachdiet.com is far far better - good fats and good carbs, no bad fats, no bad carbs. Or the Rosedale diet by Ron Rosedale if you really want to be super slim and super healthy super quick.

Any diet that attempts to eliminate or seriously restrict the intake of any food group, is not going to be safe. People are going to lose weight by sacrificing important nutrients.
