I think it has to do with the absorption rate of alcohol into the blood and the speed with which it is subsequently processed by the liver. The thing that makes you drunk is not the alcohol itself but the intermediate product (acetaldehyde) which your body produces which is actually a deadly poison. This is what affects the brain, rather than the alcohol itself.
This page explains what basically happens. It varies, though, according to a number of factors and one's 'drunkness' is controlled by those as well. I'm sure that there are lots of complicated things going on due to various other things that are contained in drinks. Vodka (or pure spirit) tends to give less bad hangovers than, say red wine or cheap whisky. Beer makes some people fighting drunk while cider makes the same people very mellow.
A great deal of it must be psychological and yet more to do with whatt you have eaten. Ever noticed, for example, how fast you can sober up when an emergency happens? Or how sometimes you can be silly on one glass yet others it takes a whole bottle before you collapse?
Drinking milk or olive oil (or eating with wine as the French always do) has a big effect on how drunk one gets and in what way.

U get drunk on wine quicker coz U don't drink spirits.
But spirits have a higher alcohol content, than wine.
with exception 2 some fortified wines that have a kick.
but saying all that I don't drink.
alcohol is so damaging
2 the drunk & those around them.

I have no idea and the only explanation I can offer you is that wine is the social equivalent of ROCKET FUEL!! Although I was once at a wine tasting and the speaker told us that wine may not seem very potent as its usually only about 12% vol, but then she pointed out that if you drank 3 bottles of wine, its the equivalent of drinking a litre bottle of vodka...which means drinking 12 glasses of wine or 18 vodkas...so wine defo gets you drunk faster!!

You probably drink it a lot faster than spirits, and if you have a mixer the alcohol content is only going to be around 5% for a single and a mixer compared to 10%-12% for wine.

A doctor friend once told me that wine makes you high from the fumes, rather than drunk from the alcohol. Don't know whether there is anything to it, but I find the effect of wine is different from liquor, too.

In many cases it has to do with the sugars involved, how you drink it and the volume of each drink.
I'm with you though a can drink almost a 750 of vodka and run five miles but a bottle of wine and I'm toasted mini-wheats.

You may be drinking an equivalent amount of alcohol in a shorter period of time when you drink wine. You might have an allergy to the wine or the yeast in it.

you'll start feeling it quicker. Most spirits tend to make you feel just fine and then knock you over the head. Win is a steadier but slower drink.
