The minister who officiated at my wedding was a Presbyterian who believed that everyone had a right to be married in a church. He routinely officiated at weddings of interfaith couples and the wedding before ours incorporated the traditions of a Jewish/Catholic couple.

It's not difficult to find an officiant who will perform a non-denominational ceremony but for many religions, the promise you mentioned will come up.

I never had to promise anything like that and have never heard it before when people got married. What X religion are you in?

go to the justice of the peace if you want a secular wedding. There are plenty of "ministers" who will leave God out of your wedding, and since your gonna leave Him out of your marriage, maybe you'll call on Him during your divorce
