You might get away with using margarine instead.

Shortening is a solid white fat made from hydrogenated vegetable oil. Sometimes known as Crisco™ which is a brand name of shortening. Butter or margarine can be substituted for shortening but your end product will have a more buttery flavor. There is also a butter flavor Crisco™.

Use butter or margarine. "Shortening" refers to any semi-solid fat. I assume you're saying you don't have any vegetable shortening (Crisco, for example). But butter and margarine are both shortening agents and both work well for making bread. Vegetable oil won't work as well in any recipe that calls for solid shortening, because you can't use an equivalent amount and making the substitution is tricky.

Sometimes if a recipe calls for vegetable oil I will substitute margarine instead because it's already made of 70% vegetable oil most of the time and also more flavorable. But I'm not sure if it would be the same as substituting for shortening though but you could try it.

You can use coconut oil.. its gives a sweet coconutty flavor to bread, is solid at room temperature like shortening, and is much healthier for you than hydrogenated shortenings.
