I have two kids, ages 11 and 9, and am hiring a sitter for a school night, probably starting at about 5:30. Sitter won't have to cook, my guys'll be in bed by 8:00 and we should be back by 11:00-12:00. Any recommendations for an hourly rate? Should I pay a flat fee for the evening? Obviously, we don't get out often -- lol.

The going rate is around 5-6 dollars. I would say $5 since they are older and more self-sufficient and will also be in bed most of the time. If the sitter cleans up well, I usually throw a little extra in cuz a lot of sitters don't bother to pick up or tidy up at all.

The fact that the babysitter is a young girl or an older girl shouldn't matter here. This falls under the heading for "you get what you pay for." For two kids at that age, I would pay at least $10 and hour. Although the sitter would really only be with them for a few hours, she will still be there making sure they're safe while they sleep. And if you ever hear good reports from your kids, give her a bonus . . . everyone loves to hear that they do well at something. With extra bonuses, she'll work even harder with your kids to get the positive reinforcement again. :) Good luck!

If my sitter is only staying from about 5 or 6 till 8 or 9, I pay her $10, considering it a half night. If she stays till midnight, or comes early to be a mother's helper so I can clean and get ready before I leave, I pay her $20.

I never ask her to cook or clean, though she does straighten up.

But she's a young girl. If I was to hire an older girl, I'd pay her what she'd make working elsewhere for the night, $6/hr or so.

I would give them a set rate of $20 bucks. Boy how time has changed. My sister only got $1 an hour back in the day.
