Try the following : do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. The 45 minute thing is not true, but don't over 60 minutes at a time.
Do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.
The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!
Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.
Read fitness magazines, like Shape and Fitness for motivation and tips.
Good luck and stick at it.

Hands down my vote goes for the Cambridge Diet. It's been around for over 30 years, is FDA approved, has a long and proven track record of success (and for KEEPING the weight off) is perfect for those who need a strong support system to keep them motivated but don't have the time or finances to attend meetings (support system is internet based or telephonic) and is cheaper than nearly every other diet program I've found. Results are fast too and that alone keeps you motivated. I've lost 30 lbs so far doing this since July and feel fantastic!

If you want to start out slow try walking - aim for 10,000 steps a day. Need motivation? Do you have a pet that needs walking? If not you could always get a walking partner. If you go with somebody or a pet you won't realize how far you've gone and you'll soon see weight loss results. Vary your speed too - speed walk for 30 seconds and than slow it down for a minute or if you're in town - walk a block than jog a block.

Having battled with my weight most of my life, I know how difficult it can be to maintain a healthy weight. I have tried many diets that work. The only problem is that they are virtually impossible to keep for life. Diets work to lose weight short term. For instance i did the Atkins (NO CARBS) Diet and lost over 40 lbs. in less than 2 months. PROBLEM: No body can handle that diet for very long. It's just not heatlhy. I have also done "My Own" diet which consisted of eating only Soy based products instead of meat or chicken together with vegetables and Complex Carbs. PROBLEM: I travel A LOT on business and it is just not convienient to do this diet. It is hard to find restaurants with these ingredients. Bottom line is that we live in a country (USA) that promotes "Fast and Easy" meals that are SUPER HIGH in fats and sodium. It is basically easy to keep good eating habits, yet it is very difficult. Meaning the good stuff is out there, but it is inconvenient in our fast-paced society.
My suggestion (and one that I should be following myself) is to eat better quality meals as often as possible and EXCERSICE!
