Run it under water to wash all the blood away. Dry it and then apply a triple-antibiotic ointment like Neosporin. You'll want to be absolutely sure that it is clean to prevent cat-scratch fever.

As for why the cat did it, I wouldn't repeat whatever you were doing when he first bit you. Cats tend to be a little more aggressive because they're more closely related to their wild ancestors than dogs.

As far as what you should do--rinse the cut thoroughly with water, then peroxide. Apply antibiotic salve, get a tetanus booster, and watch carefully for signs of infection (redness, swelling).

As for how to handle the cat, be more aware of his behavior when you are handling him--most cats give warning that Something Isn't Right in the way the move their tails and heads. If it's a play-bite or an excitement-bite problem, you can try tapping him (not softly, but not hard) with a single finger on the nose to make him stop. That stops all but the most riotous of cats, who think that the nose-tap is an invitation to start an all-out kittywrestling match.

He obviously did not want to be picked up at that point! cats will often only want hugs on their terms - cross the line and they tell you!! He cannot say "NO" to you but did he meow at you or struggle before he bit you? Maybe you need to learn to read his signals.
I always tell my children that if one of the cats scratches of bites then they must have done something to annoy it - may not have been much every cat is very different and some do not tolerate being picked up at all.

As for the bite - wash it thouroughly do not apply ointments unless prescribed if it gets infected which it won't if you keep area clean. If its bleeding a lot cover with a dry non adhesive dressing to allow area to breathe. If wound is gaping see your GP.

Immediately cleanse the wound with peroxide and keep a watch
on to see if it swells or reddens and stays that way for long. is it an indoor or outdoor cat? If he's an inside cat you have less chance for serious problems. If it's a small bite keep it clean, if its a good sized bite I'd see a doctor if it gets worse. Animal bites
can be serious. Has he had his shots? Were you playing or did he attack ?

Clean and disinfect the wound and then ask a vet for advise about the cat. What did you do to the kitty for it to bite you? Whatever you did, don't do it again. But the cat probably just didn't feel like being bothered at the time and lashed out.

You just picked him up when he wasnt in the mood- its not that he doesnt love you. I have 5 cats, and if I dont chose the right moment, it means I havent observed their signals. Dab TCP on the wound and keep it clean. Try again later, good luck.

The question is..................
Why did he bite you?

Were you playing and he got rough? Did you disturb his nap? Steal his toy?

Or did he just stroll up and bite?

Need the facts to help however.... wash the bite with soap and water, hold it under water for a minute or two and use a sterile bandage to keep it clean.

Then if you were picking him up for a hug.... he wasn't in the mood. I guess he had a headache.
He's probably just wanting to be alone today.

What you can do right now is wash and disinfect the bite mark. What you can do in the future is to learn to read his body language and refrain from picking him up if he shows signs of not wanting to be picked up.
Animals are not simply 'things' to be cuddled whenever we humans feel like it. We have to respect their moods or suffer the consequences.

Cats are rather mean spirited when they want to be. Interesting personalities. Could have been you were irritating him and didn't realize it. Wouldn't worry, unless he is exhibiting abnormal behavior.
Make sure you wash off your bite, use hydrogen peroxide (not rubbing alcohol), let it foam up and rinse it again with hydrogen peroxide. Slap some neosporin on it. You want to make sure you don't get infected there.

I am sure that the kittye did not mean to HURT YOU.. Is it a baby or an adult? If a baby, they certainly do not know if their playful bites are hurting or not.. Just wipe the wound off with alcohol if you have some and do not hurt the kitty
