The "punch'" refers to the Marciano Walcott heavy weight title match in 1952, when Marciano koed Walcott in round 13 with a right to the jaw.Actually both fighters swung at the same time, but Marcianos' punch landed first,

To clarify the previous answer, the end of Clay/Liston II is usually referred to as the "phantom punch" because it was really hard to see. This led to conspiracy theorists speculating that Liston "took a dive" and fell to the canvas on a punch that didn't connect. With the way that a young Clay dominated Liston in the first fight, this is a hard theory for me to buy.

"The punch" I've always understood to be from Robinson/Fullmer 2 as the first poster noted. Big ups to Gene Fullimer, who's a native of my home state of Utah. There's a rec center in the SLC named after the guy now and he used to own a steakhouse. Any guy who owns a victory over arguably the best "pound for pound" fighter in history--Sugar Ray Robinson--deserves major respect...

Here's the clip from the Wikipedia entry on Fullmer describing "the punch"

>>
Fullmer won the world middleweight championship on January 2, 1957 when he upset the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson by winning a 15 round decision. On May 1, 1957 they fought a rematch. The fight began as expected with Fullmer using his strength, and awkwardness to bull into Robinson and force him onto his heels. In the fifth round Robinson, while backing up, lashed out with what has been called the perfect left hook. It caught Fullmer flush on the chin and knocked him cold.

I believe the one you are referring to is the punch that Sugar Ray Robinson hit Gene Fullmer with in the 5th round of their title contest. It was a perfect punch that dropped iron jaw Gene for the ten count. Other than that the punch landed by Rocky Marciano on Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round to win the heavyweight championship could also be regarded as the punch.

Cassius Clay fighting Sonny-The Bear Liston it really never hit Liston. Sonny was controlled by the mob and a heroin addict he was junked up the night before the fight many a fight aficionado think Sonny took the dive.
