I dont understand why people have to use handicap stalls. There are 8 empty rooms and people have to walk all the way to end of the bathroom to use the handicap one. What if someone handicap needed it? Wouldn't you feel like an a**hole walking out and seeing them wait for it?? GOOD ANSWERS WILL GET TEN POINTS.

I don't condone that, but I'm guessing that they probably have to poop and assume that the possibility of someone using that stall right after them is unlikely (and therefore won't have to deal with the stench).

I say this because people at my job with, shall we say, digestive problems always run to that stall when they need to do their business.

Handicapped stalls, unlike a parking space, aren't by permit only. I feel it hard to define what a "handicap" is that would make it more difficult than usual to use a bathroom stall. So I try not to guess regarding others who choose to use this stall - even those without a "legitimate" handicap may find it excessively difficult to use another stall because of weight issues, fear of tight spaces, etc., and I believe those with such issues definitely have as much right as someone in a wheelchair to use these stalls, if needed.

Personally, if another stall is available, I will leave the handicapped stall free out of etiquette. However, if all stalls are taken, there is no one else waiting, and I need to use the restroom, then definitely, I would use a handicapped stall. And if during that time, someone with a "legitimate" handicap needed the use of that stall, I wouldn't necessarily feel embarassed for having used it. Most of us have had to wait in line in order to use a restroom stall, and while this stall is more convenient for the handicapped, there's no reason why anyone shouldn't understand a reasonable wait, if all other stalls were taken.

Some people use them for the added space. I personally will use them only if all the other stalls are full. Its not like I'm going to be a long time.
Alot of bathrooms that I have seen combine the baby change station with the handicap bathroom, haivng small children I am forced to use it for diaper changes.
I am nice about it though.. if there is a handicapped person needing the facilities at the same time I do I let them go first.

I only use the Handicap stalls when the others are taken and I REALLY have to go. I have a weak bladder and can't hold it. BUT if someone who needed the stall were waiting to use it, I'd be mortified. I would feel so guilty. On the other hand, it's not like it's a parking space - you don't need a permit to use it. ANYONE can use the stall - I've seen lots of bigger people use the stalls, more room to squeeze in. I suppose that might make them handicapped...Anyway, as a general rule, I don't use the handicap stalls unless absolutely necessary.

In my building the only people I see using the handicaped stall while other stalls are free are the obese people and I can see why!

Now why do fit people use the handicaped stall? For the same reason I think: for the space!

I use them because they are bigger.
I don't like the tiny stalls. Not to mention the fact that the doors on them swing in and I have had to put my legs up against the toilet to get out of them.
They should make all the stalls bigger then I would leave the handicapped alone.
No I wouldn't feel like an a**hole. I've had to wait for bathroom stalls before and I'm sure they have too.

one time when i was using the bathroom somewhere, this girl was using the handicap stall and an old lady had to wait for it. when she came out the old lady started yelling at her. it really wasnt her fault though because at the time there wasnt anyone waiting for it and all the other bathrooms were full. but i guess when all the others are empty, i dont see why you should have to use the handicap stall. i dont know. the only reason i ever use the handicap is if i have my baby in the stroller and i dont have any other choice.

If it's the only stall available when you enter, and you cannot wait, then you're within your rights to use the handicap stall. If there are others available, then an able-bodied person should use one of those and leave the handicap stall open as a courtesy.

I totally agree with you. I have always tried to honor the handicap and elderly by passing on the stall. I must admit that I have utilized the stall when my daughter was little and I pushed the BIG stroller. I think in many ways BIG strollers can be considered as a handicap...hahahaha!

I agree up to a point. When I was pregnant and didn't FIT one of those rinky dink little stalls, I used the handicapped ones. I had one woman act really snotty about me being in "her" stall until I walked out with all nine months of my pregnancy bulging out. Also, if all of them are taken, then by all means, don't pee on yourself, just go to the handicapped stall quickly! I've also used it when I had all my children with me when they were smaller.

You are absolutely right. If there are nonhandicap stalls available, folks should use those first. And, if all else is taken, they should try very hard to use the handicap stall as quickly as possible so that it is available to those who need it.
