Its called snitching. If you feel unhappy about this persons gossip, then confront them and tell them that you are not happy at what you are hearing and ask them to refrain from speaking ill in your company.By you going running back to the person being gossiped about your just the same but worse. There is a saying "what you dont know does'nt hurt". My colleagues and myself are dealing with this situation now and it is causing so much ill feeling and conflict within our workplace. Unfortunately we dont know who our gossiper is (ok we've all got a good idea). The thing is we are not gossiping we are discussing issues that we are unhappy about. If it is a personal or bullying attack then challenge them if it is idle gossip ignore them. Dont get involved because you will more than likely end up getting the dirty end of the stick. If you dont like the conversation that you are hearing walk away that will soon put a stop to whoever is doing the the gossip a clear message that you are not happy and a clear message that they are boring and need to get a life.

Excellent question. I kind of view gossip as idle chatter about others when they are not around. I think informing somebody that somebody else maybe isn't really being a good friend is not so much gossip as it is necessary information. I think you need to look at your own motives here. If you are trying to be a friend, and going to the person that the gossip is about and not the whole neighborhood, I would say you not gossipping. I would want to know if it was me that was being gossipped about. That way I could at least defend myself if it wasn't true.

I've always wondered that too! I try not to gossip but if you tell a fact about someone you can be accused of gossiping. I think it's all in why and how you're talking about someone else. My rule is, if I would say it to their face it's not gossip. If I would say it behind their back it is.

Is the person being gossiped about your friend or family? If so, you should stick up for them and let them know what is being said about them so they can put a stop to it. If it's some random person, it might not be any of your business. At the end of the day, if someone is going to get their feelings hurt and you can see a way to stop it, you should.

.

Gossiping takes two to do. So it is not only the person giving gossip but those who take gossip also participate in the gossiping process.

Therefore by knowing about the gossiping, you automatically become part of the gossiping.

Hi Samm! I don't think it is , it can be a tricky subject to broach though . I think I'd drop some oblique hints about this person doing the gossiping and hope my matew would pick up on them!!

I would respect my friend if she told me someone else was gossiping about me. Gossiping is malicious and hurts people.

No, not really. Others may say you're only adding "fuel to the wildfire", but I'd like to think my true friends would inform me if I was being gossipped about (and by whom). Let's dubb this instance as the "gossip-waiver", because it serves a good purpose. So it's not real gossip!

Yes - Gossip is Gossip

The idea I came up with to figure out if something is gossip or not, is to think 'would the person I am talking about mind me saying this to this person, and is there any need to say it'?
This doesn't always stop me saying it, but it does sometimes.
