They were in the same classes I was in, but they have no idea what it's about. I wonder if they spaced off in sex-ed too?

They have been brainwashed into ignoring these classes. They instead learn stuff like, "If evolution was like true and stuff then why are there still monkeys?"

It's sad.

"Can people ever post serious questions on here instead of trying to discredit other people for their beliefs? We understand evolution just fine... we just do not believe it... It makes no sense at all... if humans evolved from monkeys... why are there still monkeys here, how come they didn't all evolve... and if the answer is because some of every specie stayed and did not evolved... then how come there aren't a lot of half evolved creatures around here... I mean, what happened to the Neanderthals... did all of them just happen to evolve?"

Am I the only one who finds this response highly amusing, given the question? And, I have to clear this up, NOWHERE did any evolutionary scientist/book/person/anything EVER say that humans evolved from monkeys. We evolved from a common ancestor: humans when one way, monkeys when another. And for another, there could be "half evolved creatures" out there, but seeing as evolution on this scale takes a very long time, we wouldn't know would we?

Anyway, many of them refuse to understand it at all (as shown by the above quote) because they are afraid of it. Don't deny it folks, it's the truth. Others understand it fine and chose to not believe it because it contradicts their religion and/or they think there are to may gaps.

Because if they understood evolution, they'd realize they'd have to look at the creation stories in genesis as symbolic, and then they could never tell which part of the bible was symbolic and which was literal.

It'd shake their faith too hard if they realized the truth.

Venus, a scientific theory is a model that describes a well established phenomenon. When you say, "evolution is a theory," you are saying, "I believe that species change and adapt and that species can become other species. We're just still working on figuring out all the details."

So, is Evolution a theory? Or are you going to say what you really mean and call it a lie outright? One sounds 'clever', the other makes a fool of you. Problem is, I don't know which one does which when it comes down to it.

I think you are making an overgeneralization and as a result are wrong. i have studied evolution in depth and found it lacking in certain key areas. Just because I do not accept every theory at face value does not mean I lack intellect.

As for the crack about sex-ed, let's face it. Even Christians are human and get excited over the topic. If you cannot make a point without being insulting, you may need to reevaluate your position. I have put a link at the bottom of this for your edification.

thats a pretty generalized thing to say. i take university classes in evolution and come out with honours and this is because i DONT understand it?

EDIT

"We understand evolution just fine... we just do not believe it... how can you say you understand evolution, and then ask these questions? you obviously don't know what evolution about.

I'm muslim and I'm studying evolution in detail as of right now. I started studying 2 weeks ago. I force myself to be completely independent and use my reasoning when studying things, but what I have learned so far about evolution came very conflicting with my common sense. However, I've commited myself to get to the bottom of it and understand it as unbiased scientist.
Peace be upon us all. All troubles and conflicts in world came because of lack of knowledge or lack of intenttion to deal w/ available knowledge.

I am a believer, I understand evolution. I don't agree with it, it's ideas are full of holes. If we came from monkey's why are there still monkeys? that is one of many examples. It's better if you don't put all believers in one catagory. This question clinchers it, you are not a believer. I had my suspicion....

It's called selective memory...

They saw no reason to pay attention and/or remember what they were taught in school, because they didn't want to hear it/believe it. Although they heard the same facts, they forgot them as soon as school was out.

I did something similar with Trigonometry... :)

Not everyone is good at critical thought. Some are lazy, some just suck at it.

Also, some people probably don't want to know about it. it's easier to believe the strawmen and feel smug about it.
