OMG, I am amazed at the answers I am seeing here - almost all of you folks are afraid of knives? There is nothing in my house that I fear someone will use to kill me. If you think about it, a robber can use ANYTHING in you house to kill you.
As far as children go, you can't keep everything out of their sight, you have to "teach" them that they are not for children and they will get hurt and be punished if they touch them. Store them in a drawer or in a knife block on the counter and I think you'll all do fine.

Have to agree: I really don't like having these big kitchen knives in the house, and at a more practical level, am wondering if I am going to cut myself one day when I do the washing up, and fail to notice that I have picked up the knife by the wrong end or the wrong way round!
I guess that we are all getting a bit paranoid these days as we hear and see the damage done to people with these things being used as weapons!

I watch cooking programs on TV everyday. Most chefs use a lg. knife called a "Santoku" knife. I shopped around and purchased a middle priced one (at $43) and it was so sharp I almost cut my finger off. I'm actually afraid of the darned thing. I'm on in age, so that may cause me to have more fear. So I figured that to wash the knife, I'd use a long handled dish brush, then lay a folded dish towel on the counter & carefully rub the flat sides of the knife on it to dry the knife. Don't use real large knives on small pieces of food - only a larger pieces of meat, for instance, chuck or top sirloin to cut into stew meat. Phew! I was really scared, but I don't use the knife as much as I'd like to. I don't blame you because you have children in the house. My knife is kept 'ALL THE TIME WHEN NOT IN USE" in a wooden block made with slits especially for knives. Period!

This has never bothered me. Obviously I kept them out of harms way when my children were young. Your fears are probably linked to how safe you feel in your own home. None of us can be 100% safe at all times but some people are safer than others, depending on environment, home security, being in the public eye etc. I would find it difficult preparing certain meals and serving roast joints of meat without such knives. Perhaps you have a phobia of them , if so it's not anything to worry about, as far as phobias go...just carry on without them if it makes you comfortable.

You aren't weird, just perhaps a bit over protective. Knives are OK if treated right, like being kept reliably away from the kids. I used to have guns once. Dangerous? Maybe, but unloaded, they are little more than a piece of pipe.

Stick to Big Mac, Baskin Robbins, Col. Saunders etc. at a drive through.
No need for anything than fingers and plastic cutlery.
We mature people know why we need metal knives for proper preparation of real food.
Just keep your offspring away from them as you would your medication .
Simple really.

One should always use the correct tool for the job. Large knives are not always necessary, but there are times when they are the correct tool.
As far as the kids go, use the knife, clean it, and put it away OUT OF THEIR REACH. Kind of a no-brainer.

I need my big knives to cut big things. Just like I need my big guns to shoot people who might try to kill me with a big knife.
My kids know that both are dangerous and do not fiddle with them unless they are being directly supervised by an adult.
Take your big knife and start using it alot. You will fear it less....

I have a ton of knives and they don't bother me.

If I've washed a big knife, I dont leave it sitting out all night incase my house gets broken into and they use it as a weapon against me because it's so handy. I also hide cables, just incase any robber gets any funny ideas.
