I've been working out for about 6weeks now and feel like I've gained rather than lost weight. I saw someone for the first time in about a month or so, and they commented that I had gained weight. I do 30 mins of cardio and alternate weight lifting(arms, legs, back) and finish up with abs. I do this 4-5 times a week. I eat 3 meals a day, small bagel and orange juice for breakfast(I'm not a breakfast person, I never feel hungry so for me this is a huge effort) I have a salad or small sandwich(turkey/swiss on wheat bread) I drink water and may have 1 can of coke a week. The only change I've noticed, is feeling a lil sore(but that's normal) and it's much easier to wake up in the morning. I have acid reflux, and my dr. has always told me to work out and I wont have to stay on medicine all the time. Before working out, I was fine and hadn't felt any pains for a while, even stopped taking the medicine, but now that I'm working out, I'm feeling pains again.
What am I doing wrong?

I have to be honest and tell you all that I have not stepped on a scale because historically, they have been my downfall. I'm basing the weight gain on clothes fitting tighter and what some people have said

I had this problem too until my personal trainer told me what I was doing wrong. If you're trying to lose fat don't lift heavy weights. You should lift a light amount of weight and more reps. Also as far as eating, try 4 or 5 small meals and watch the amount of carbs. Even small bagels can have like 20 carbs. Try increasing your water intake; water helps a lot!

I have been battling my weight since I was a little girl and the best tip I have is to focus on inches. Weight fluctuates a lot (read latest copy of Fitness magazine to find out how much), but inches rarely change overnight. Also do what works best for you. Everyone's body is not the same.

the can of coke, the medicines can increase your fat. Plus, you are just working out for six weeks now, that means your body is making changes and adapting to the new program. It may seem you are growing fatter or gaining weight but your muscles are developing and that means a weight increase. This shouldn't be a problem. Gaining weight in your case may be a sign of getting healthier on the long run. You already claim you can get up easy in the morning, that's a good sign, for starters. Just keep on following your program and don't overdo it.

Of course you're gaining weight! Muscle is denser and heavier then fat is. You're gaining muscle, which will alter your metabolism (make it go faster). You're waking up more easily in the morning because you're hitting REM state (dream stage, when your body repairs itself the most easily) and staying there for a longer period because of your activity. Basically, you're tiring yourself out enough that your body knows when to shut down.

As for the acid reflux, the human digestive system is powered by movement - your reflux will get much better as the time goes on. Its actually when you stop moving you get problems like heartburn and constipation. Your intestines work by peristalsis, which is triggered by exercise. Your acid reflux will get better, just give it time. Listen to your doctor on this one!

You're totally on the right track and are doing great! Congratulations!

Have you ever seen what 5 pounds of steel looks like? It's small and compact Now think of 5 pounds of feathers....it takes a huge amount of feathers to add up to 5 pounds.
This is how fat [feathers] and muscle [steel] compare. You can gain a small amount of muscle ,and it weighs more than that same visual amount of fat.
It is likely that the muscle you gain is weighing more and the more muscle tissue you have, the more metabolically active tissue you will have which means you will burn more calories even while at rest.
Give it time, you 're doing great!

I dont think yoru doing anything wrong the fat is simple becoming denser as it turns into muscle which makes you heavier. Because muscle is heavier/denser then fat. I wouldnt worry to much about it but try something that has a light regiment of weight lifting rather then thats alot of your workout not sure if it is but that is what your doing. Try more cardio jogging etc keep heart rate up, aerobics. I believe that is your only problem is your fat is turning into muscle instead of coming off which is good.

Don't focus only on weight, but on how you feel and how your clothes fit. Working out will initially add muscle mass, but then that added mass will require more calories, so the weight loss will be there eventually. Just keep it up.

you are losing weight and gaining muscle. Try a tape measure to check how you are doing, instead of a scale

Keep it up. Don't watch the scale. Although building muscle adds pounds your body will soon respond with the toning you're looking for. Watch the calorie intake and maybe add some more cardio.

You're gaining muscle wait which weighs more than body fat. You're not doing anything wrong. Talk to your doc about your situation if you're worried.

the question is... are you gaining inches? If you are just gaining weigh and no inches then you are gaining muscle. If your gaining fat then I don't know that is a mystery to me
