The Patterdale Terrier, sometimes called the "Black Fell Terrier," has a short, coarse, broken coat or wire coat that comes in red, brown, black & tan, or black

The thick, hard, adult coat of a Lakeland Terrier is resistant to bad weather and comes in many combinations of black, black & tan, reddish, red grizzle, wheat, liver & blue, grizzle, and grizzle & tan.

Patterdale terrier - 95% of the breed is black, but bronze (black that shines brown in sunlight), grizzle, chocolate, red, liver (with red nose)and black-and-tan are also acceptable. White feet and white chest markings appear in all coat colours.
Lakeland teriier - The breed is similar to the Welsh Terrier and has thick, hard hair that is coloured black and tan, blue and tan, red-gray, red, wheat, liver, blue, or black.

Really all depends on the colour of the parents. Acceptable colours for Patterdales include black, red; liver (with a red nose); grizzle, black and tan; bronze. Ninety-five percent of the breed will produce black-colour dogs, but the odd dog of all colours will come with white feet and chest. Some of the best ones are marked like this.
Lakies can be black and tan, blue and tan, red, wheaten, red grizzle, liver, blue or black. Small tips of white on feet and chest undesirable but permissible. Mahogany or deep tan not typical.

I would put my money on a cross being black or red.

The current "FAD* favors that ONLY the BLACK SMOOTH be called "Patterdale".
Anything else is a FELL!!!

NOT "lakie" unless it is ONLY "lakie"...as opposed to "Lakeland".
