Because the French couldn't handle it. We were afraid the Communists would win in Vietnam and then in Cambodia/Laos and then in Thailand, etc. The idea was to stop the dominoes from falling.

America did not stick its nosein Vietnam and the USA did not start the Vietnam War and the USA Military did not lose the Vietnam War. It was lost by all of the american Yellow-bellied sap-sucking chicken civillians and the democratic weenies that they had in congress at the time.

Your question is biased to begin with. However, the French ruled Indochina since the mid 1800's. The French were kicked out of Indochina when the Japanese invaded during WW2. AFter the Japanese were defeated by the Allies and returned back to Japan; Ho Chi MInh declared an Independent Vietnam in Hanoi in September 1945. The French indicated to the Major Powers; esecially the United States, that they would not join the United Nations unless they were allowed to reestablished their colony in Indochina. Since the World had just suffered horribly because of WW2; it was felt by the powers that be, that the lessor sin of letting France back into Indochina was better than not having a Global organization to try and prevent another major World War. Furthermore, with Joseph Stalin taking over Eastern Europe and reneging on his promises that the people of Eastern Europe would be able to have elections for self-determination; if was felt that it was in the West's best interest to let France go back into Indochina. Ho Chi Minh headed for the jungles and 8 years later, the French were finally defeated at the battke of Dein Bein Phu and the peace agreement established a North and South Vietnam at the 54th Parellal. By this time, the new United Nations had fought a major conflict in Korea and the United States instead of recognizing Ho Chi MInh and his organization as independence fighters; determined them to be part of the global communist scourge and had to be contained. Therefore, the US supported the government's of South Vietnam against the North. We had high hopes for a democratic south vietnam; however, there was massive corruption within the S. Vietnamese goverment, military and within the US military industrial complex. Why we lost, we didn't lose, we just realized that it was no longer in the US best interest to support a corrupt regieme in S, Vietnam and we left it to stand or sink on it's own. Since it was so corrupt, it fell easily to a major communist offensive in the Spring of 1975.

North and South Vietnam were separate countries, South was an Ally of the U.S. the North was Communist.
The North tried to invade the South, the south asked for help so the US gave it to them. Then a cease fire was signed, the US pulled out, then North Vietnam waited a little while, broke the ceasefire and re invaded and took over the South.

The only reason the US "lost" is Politicians made the Military fight defensively, and not offensively. You cant win anything by only playing defense. The best you can hope for is a stalemate.

You read WHAT textbook?
Clearly you either missed a few chapters or it was not a complete history of that war.

The United States did NOT start the war.
We made a BIG mistake in helping the French.

It is very difficult to explain the whole nightmare that was Viet Nam, but I'll attempt a short course for you.

1. In the mid-19th century, France colonized Indochina (including Viet Nam)...rubber was one of the chief exports.

2. 1947 - Political opponents (a.k.a. communists) to the French started a war.

3. The United States funded up to 80% of the French forces.

4. By early 1954, the French said they were winning the war (sound familiar?).

5. By late 1954, they were in defeat and wanted out.

6. The United States feared a communist takeover and agreed to help the South Vietnamese.

7. From 1954 to 1960, the US propped up the free government;

8. from there, things went to hell for America.

What kind of idiotic question is this? America didn't start that war, where do you get your information from... a Russian comic book? As to why America lost the was, you text book genius, is because the politicians that were sitting thousands of miles from the war were making the stupid decisions. The biggest stupid decision they made was to not let the military take control of what they did best.

I guess you need a lesson as to what the war was about too, huh?

See previous question.

Your question did make me laugh but the US stuck its nose in Vietnam to prevent Communism from expanding - the so-called domino effect. The US left Vietnam only because US public opinion went 100% against the war.
