I was told at the end of fifth grade normal kids are expected to know around 5000 words passively (i.e. able to understand them) and 1000 words actively (i.e. able to use them in context). The range is much broader. What do you think the limits are? Not even a huge vocabulary always gives you complete command of the language. Since English is my second language, I still don't master it even if I can translate single words into english quite easily. On the other hand, on most day-to-day occasions you don't need many fancy words to express your meaning.

Interesting question. I have no idea how many english words I know, how does one go about even measuring/ counting this? Sounds like a difficult task.
The limits will vary by a persons peer group, age, even location.

Your point about not needing many fancy words to express a meaning::: you are correct in this, because that's what words are: a tool for communicating.
