Doesn't this belong in Religion and Spirituality?

Its a Hindu practice. Aum is the name of God. Most Hindu prayers will begin, end or at least contain "Aum".

It is also supposed to be the universal sound of the Universe. You start the mantra with an Aa sound (representing Brahma the Creator), continue it with an Uh sound (representing Vishnu the Preserver) and end with with the Mm (Shiva the Destroyer) so you have the Hindu Trinity or three facets of God contained in one sound.

If you are meditating or just trying to focus yourself it can be a wonderful way to focus and control your breathing. As a dancer, my dance Guru makes us chant AUM before we begin practice, to control our breathing and focus our minds. Afterwards it also make a good cool down when we've done some yoga stretches.

Its worth studying it with someone who knows what they are talking about though, like a registered Yoga Guru or Teacher. There are a lot of hippies out there who chant Aum without knowing what it means.

One of my favourite prayer Mantras is Aum Namah Shiva - to Shiva also known as Nataraja, God of Dance.
