Conures are lovely birds to have. I work at a rescue, and we have cockatoos, cockatiels, african greys, derbyans, amazons, pionus', conures, budgies and finches. Conures are very sociable, and should be kept in twos or more, always making sure there is an even number, as they like to go in pairs.
They eat small bird food, and fruity parrot mix, and love fruit. Apples, grapes and oranges are big favourites of theirs. They do not like being kept in small cages though, and unless you were willing to build an aviary for them it would not be fair to keep them, as they like to fly. Putting a door infront of another door, like a double door system is always a good idea, so that you don't lose any by accidently letting them out.
Hope this helps.

You should go to a Library and look at all the different kinds, it's a preference thing. Suns are beautiful, but are VERY LOUD!!!!! Go to a pet store and look at all the different birds, Nandays, Goldcaps, Jandays, and suns are exactly alike but different colors. You need to know what you WANT from a bird before you buy. Canoure are a problem if you live in an appartment. The neighbores will hate you, LOL. You need to be specific on exactly what you want. More Sun conures are purchased because they are beauiful, never considering they scream louder then a freight train whistle. I can't tell you how many show up on my door because they are too loud. BIRDS are loud. Know this before you buy. The worse thing that can happen is someone buys a pet because of thr way it looks, but WILL NOT buy the book on that pet a week ahead of the purchase so they KNOW what they are in for. They buy the book with, later or not at all. Reasoning they don't want a book on something they are not sure of at the cost of $10 or $20 bucks, But WILL buy a bird they are not sure of for hundreds, even thousands, and give it away because they were't expecting the animal to be this or that. INFORM YOURSELF FIRST!! It is curle to promise an animal a home, then decide it is not convient enough or quite enough. Ya keep the Kids right? SAME THING!! Hey, I wanted Fabio's kids, Got Robert's kids instead. 20 years later still got 'em........ and the nine sun conures.

I have one sun Conure and he has been a great little buddy. He is almost two years old and I think he liked it being an only. We did get a cockatiel a couple of months ago and their cages are parked across the hall from each other. They both seem to be happy that the other is there. The Sun started out trying to attack the tiel and will chase him around the house but just don't quite catch him. We have to go chase the Sun bird back to his cage after a little while and give the poor little bird a break. And at times the tiel will be the bully and pick at the sun bird.
Sun Conures are a great bird but are kind of on the loud side. He will start screaming and all I have to do is look over at him and he will act like he was just setting there and it was not him. When I turn my head he will scream again and wait for me to look and shut up again. I don't even have to get up just look his way is all. He is picking at me and we both know it. He will bite most anyone but my girlfriend and me. He can be mean if he wants to. He does love to play and will follow us around the house like a puppy and nibble on our toes to let us know he is down there. He tries to get the cat and will walk sideways tell you look at him and he will stop. Turn your head and he will take a couple more steps over to the cat. He knows he is not allowed to play with the cat. And the cat has learned he is not going to get a Conure dinner either.
They cuddle. Chew holes in your shirts play in side your shirt and with one chomp will take a chunk out of the window shades too. I forgot he took a chunk out of the 6 year old grand daughter too.. They are a lot of fun but can be trouble.
Sun Conures are one of the larger Conures and like larger food then cockatiels. They have a mouth that will open wide enough to put the cockatiels head in side. I have seen them biting at each other and have been afraid I will look over and see a headless tiel at some point. So get Conure food for a Conure with the larger bites. Get cockatiel food for a tiel, which has smaller bites. Both will eat the others food but the tiel don't seem to like the big food and the Conure just seems to dig in the tiels food.
Well I'm finished talking in circles now..

I have green cheek conures, cockatiel, budgies a zebra finch and Japanese quail in a home with two cats, 6 rats and 3 guinea pigs. Did I mention the tank with over 30 guppies? LOL!
Sun conures are well known for three things:
1) NOISE! These guys are one of the top birds for people getting evicted in apartments. it's not so much their volume, it's the quantity of noise they make! The good news is that many conures can be taught to not scream, including not walking into the birds' room if they're screeching their head off. It would be very important to develop a contact call with your bird as soon as it comes home. A contact call is something you use so the bird knows where you are. I use 'I'm here!' when my green cheeks start screeching.
2) Suns are known for their aggressive natures. They're not super duper aggressive but it can be a problem, especially during the breeding season. This cna be controlled by giving the bird a night Cagee and a play cag, plus (if you have the room) a play stand for those days you'd like to have the bird out but you can't handle them consistently.
3) These guys LOVE to play! They've been nick named 'Feathered Puppies' because they will roll around and have been known to sleep on their backs. The will hang from one nail from the top of their cages. They also love to cuddle and have been known to crawl into shirts and sleeves.
If noise is a problem, I rec commend one of the smaller conures such as the Peach fronted, Green cheeked,Marron bellied, painted, black capped, fiery shouldered and maybe the gold capped conure. Gold caps are loud, too, but their voices aren't as screechy as Suns and jendays :-) .
If you're interested in a larger bird, African greys are excellent. They're very sensitive birds though and have many behaviors you need to research. Pionus parrots are shy as well but they tend to be a little more stable in temperament. Amazons are LOUD, and have quite an attitude but they're excellent talkers like the African Grey.
Quaker Parakeets (monk parrots) are illegal in some parts of the USA but they're great birds. They have a real attitude and have been to bite someone and run away laughing. They, too, are noisy like the sun. They're unique in that they're the only species of parrot that builds actual nests. They're very cage Territorial but this trait can be worked around with training and research. They're supposed to be one of the best talkers among the smaller parrots but they have a small gravelly voice that is quite cute :-) .

I have 2 cockatoos, they are very loud at times usually when the sun begins to set, its their nature. Conures are not as loud but have piercing shrieks that I think are worse than any other parrot. If you have neighbors close by they might not appreciate them. As for dogs, I have a neighbor hwo accidently left his umbrella cockatoo out or as cockatoos are known for being escape artists the dog got a hold of the dog and that was the end of the bird.

Suns are great little guys but you have to take a lot of things in to account when doing your research. They have a very high pitched call. They aren't that good for Apt. dwellers. And having a pair of them will only double's the noise and it makes them (and any other Companion Bird)more prone to bonding with each other.
Take in to consideration the size of a cage and how much space you have?
How much time do you have each day for a birds? The larger bird the more demanding of your time. Rescues are great however they usually come with lots of baggage and unless you are prepared to deal with it get a handfed baby.

Just be aware that conures are often sent to parrot rescues because the owners couldn't stand the noise. Sun conures are so beautful, and they can be very nice pets - snuggly and tame - but they tend to be noisy.
