Split ends come as stress is put on the hair. If your hair is too dry this will cause them. Also, blowdrying and curling irons will help further. Some haircare products contain alcohol and this dries hair further.
You need to use a moisturizing shampoo and a good conditioner that adds moisture. Also, avoid the gels, hairsprays and mousses with alcohol.
And go get it trimmed. They will not go away once they are there on their own. It will stay and could get worse.

Seriously cut just the split ends off & talk with a hair stylist on a good conditioner for your hair.

first get the ends trimmed so they start out all blunt, then just restrict the amount of brushing and heat treating you do to the hair. Use a rich conditioner and comb it through while you are under the shower, carefully using a detangler comb while the water runs on your hair so that the conditioner will prevent ripping and shredding of the hairs..........
Just be gentle when brushing/ combing and they should be fine.

you need to trim the ends about 1 inch every 3 or 4 months. also if you go to the feed store ask for Tail and Mane I know that sounds strage but it works wonders with long hair plus speeds growth and makes it stronger. you will LOVE it!!!

there are a lot of good suggestions above.
also, don't brush your hair when it's wet, only use hair elastics that are covered in fabric of some kind, and never ever use heated styling tools on wet hair!

seriously it should be trimmed at least, a 1/4 inch isn't going to hurt or be that noticeable.
