I have sprained my ankle a few times too. .Some people have weaker ankles than others. It could turn into a vicious cycle. A weak ankles sprains and then is not treated properly and so is weaker and sprained again.

When an ankle is first injured, or when anything is first injured, ice can prevent swelling, but after 48 hours we switch to heat to help the circulation as the blood flow carries out damaged tissue and waste and carries in material to build new tissue. At first we rest the injured ankle, but then we slowly begin to do physical therapy as it is more healed to rebuild its strength gradually, without reinjuring it.

I do recommend that you go the the school medical person if your mother can't see that your ankle needs attention. The school medical person can write a not to your mother, that you need to be seen and treated by a doctor. Perhaps finances are a problem, in which case there are clinics at most hospitals that have a 'sliding scale' of fees. The recommendation for getting some really good supportive sneakers and shoes is a good one,, I have to wear shoes that don't let my ankle turn and twist. There are also ankle braces in the footwear or first aid departments of larger stores.

Basketball does call for quick and sharp turns, and you shouldn't be doing that if your ankle is still injured as you are not letting it heal.

ice it and give it some rest. Look into some different shoes for basketball with extra good ankle support. Check out the webMD website for information on sprained ankles. Also, it may be possible to go to a health clinic like the one where you get a physical for sports participation. Someone there may be able to fit you with an ankle brace? If the pain persists please go see a doctor. You dont want to have permanent problems.

you need to see a doctor...there are doctors that are trained in the field of sports medicine that can help you....they may have some type of splint or brace that will keep you from getting so many sprains when you play sports by supporting your ankle....i am surprised after so many sprains your mother hasnt insisted you see a doctor.......if you are still school age talk to the school nurse or one of your teachers and tell them you feel like you need to see someone about your ankle....if it keeps being injured you are going to eventually do permanent damage

First off, ask again to see the doctor. If she won't comply, then go visit your school nurse or athletic trainer/coach and get a reccomendation from her/him. You could cause long-term damage to your ankle, which you don't want...so definetly see someone about it.

To treat a sprain yourself (before going to doc/nurse)

Rest- your foot, stay off it
Ice- don't apply directly to your skin, where a sock
Compress (ace bandage)
Elevate- to decrease inflammation

Cabbage leaves applied to the sprain will also decrease inflammation (I know it sounds silly, but it works!).

Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen (tylenol) for pain...take what is reccomended for your age and don't exceed the dose!

Good luck and go see someone!!!
