I'll teach you to count from 1-100 so she can impress her kumu! :)
1 - `Ekahi
2 - `Elua
3 - 'Ekolu
4 - 'Ehā
5 - `Elima
6 - 'Eono
7 - 'Ehiku
8 - 'Ewalu
9 - 'Eiwa
10 - `Umi
20 - Iwakālua
30 - Kanakolu
40 - Kanahā
50 - Kanalima
60 - Kanaono
70 - Kanahiku
80 - Kanawalu
90 - Kanaiwa
100 - Hanele
You'll notice that for all the "tens" place numbers except for 10 and 20 follow the same pattern, which is "Kana" plus the respective one's place number (dropping the "`e" at the beginning). Basically, kana is a tens multiplier and you're basically saying "ten times three" to say thirty.
For all the other numbers, you'll use "kuma" to link the your tens place with your ones place. "Kuma" is like saying "plus. As with the tens place numbers, you'll be dropping the "`e" from the number in the ones place. For example:
11 - `Umikumakahi (`Umi +kuma + kahi)
22 - Iwakaluakumalua (Iwakalua + kuma + lua)
33 - Kanakolukumakolu (kanakolu + kuma + kolu)
44 - Kanahākumahā ( kanahā + kuma + hā)
Counting in Hawaiian is very mathmatical...the trick is to learn the words for 1-10, 20, "kana," "kuma," and the mathmatical pattern. Memorizing the pattern instead of each individual number make memorizing so much easier. More examples of this pattern:
To say 97
"10 times" + "nine" + "plus" + "seven"
"Kana" + "iwa" + "kuma" + "hiku" = "Kanaiwakumahiku"
To say 73
"10 times" + "seven" + "plus" + "three"
"Kana" + "hiku" + "kuma" + "kolu" = "Kanahikukumakolu"
To say 17
"Ten" + "plus" + "seven"
"`Umi" + "kuma" + "hiku" = "`Umikumahiku"
To say 25
"Twenty" + "plus" + "five"
"Iwakalua" + "kuma" + "lima" = "Iwakaluakumalima"
Hope this helps!
