My daughter started to complain that she was itchy on her chest about a week and a hlaf ago. Hives were noticed 3 days ago when I was helping her put calamine lotion on to help with the itch. Hives went on her chest, back, neck and stomach. We started benedryl and have been taking it on a regular basis. After the 3rd day, the hives do not seem to be getting better, but just a little worse. How long should I wait for the benedryl to take effect?

sounds like it's time to take her to an Allergist. poor girl must be miserable. You'll probably be asked a number of questions regarding the household products you've been using.. so be prepared when you go. Also a list of current medications she's taking (if any) - include vitamins.

My 5 yr old daughter recently had hives on her face. We never figured out what caused it. Have you changed anything recently like laundry soap, shampoo...things that she would continually come into contact with? If the benadryl isn't taking care of it, take her to see her pediatrician. My daughter had to be put on prednisone (a steroid) for about a week, and the hives went away.

Does she have an allergy to Benedryl?
If not, go ahead and give.
I'm a nurse and I give Benedryl to my patients if it is ordered. It is an antihistamine and helps with hives.

If it has already been a couple days, you should take her to the doctors asap. if those were just hives they should be healing by now. It could be something worse or it could be something as simple as you changed laundry detergent. you might want to check out mayoclinic and look up hive or rashes.....
