They obviously don't know much about Christianity. I'm not Catholic but I know who started it all.

I was raised in the Catholic Church until I was 14 when I choose to go my own way. I know who founded the Church and I also know when it was founded many who have answered are wrong on here...Peter was the one who started in 33 AD. There we many Jews who wanted to keep their way of worship included in being a Christian. So many of the feast were still celebrated...It was not until Later that the Catholic Church started to change...When the Church reached the Romans, there were a lot of Pagans in the Land and the Church basically said if we are going to get the pagans to believe in the one true savior we need to help them by relating ideas in a way they will understand. It was during this time that some Pagan rituals were included into the Catholic Church. Throughout the Centuries the Church has been a great super power when it comes to Jesus...But the true question is Do you HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS? That is how you know you are a Christian. Are you walking to try and better yourself to be CHRIST-LIKE that is what the term Christian means. SO are you walking to be like Christ? I believe Catholics can be Christians....Just as I believe that a nonbeliever can be in the pulpit. We have no right to Judge if a person is a Christian...we can however hold each other accountable to the actions Christians are supposed to walk.
I am now an On Fire Christian serving Jesus Christ any way I can.

(I usually DON"T even try to answer this kind of questions)
You are wrong there. Not Catholicism but Christianity as a whole "started" that year. Writing about Church history is a several volume endeavor. Most of the Christian "sects" out there started just after the "reformation" (or even much later) in the mid sixteenth century. Earlier divisions (early middle ages and before) branched out to be Catholics, Orthodox (Greek and Russian) and Copts (Egyptian).

The Catholic church was given the Authority by Jesus Christ to declare what is bound and what is not bound.

The Letters written of Jesus life story were written by many many people. It was the Catholic Church which by Divine institution declared which of these many letters were Authentic of the Holy Spirit, and which were not Divinely inspired. Thus the canon of the Bible was established by the Roman Catholic Church. Saint Jerome a Roman Catholic monk compiled the Latin Vulgate which is the text where all others are based.

Only the Catholic Church can proclaim as matter of historical fact that they were created directly by Jesus Christ human and Divine hand. Thus is this personal relationship with Jesus and His Church He directly established. Each Catholic must also establish that personal relationship with Christ through the Church He established in 33 AD. This is historical FACT.

Saint Augustine himself coined the name of this Christian Church when he described it as the Catholic Faith. Universal.

Jesus founded the church.
It's a bit difficult to nail down an exact time that the church was founded. But, imho, the church has existed ever since Jesus began His ministry. People became members of His church when they accepted His invitation to "follow Me".
Men over the centuries who were inspired by God wrote as they were inspired, and many of their writings have come down to us. The Bible as we know it today was compiled from these writings by the Catholic church.
I believe the church existed long before Constantine made Christianity legal.
I do have a problem, however, imagining Peter as a pope, wearing that hat, and having people kneel befor him and kiss his ring. I think Peter was a bit too humble for that. Besides, both Peter and Paul deferred to the authority of James back in Jerusalem...evidently they both figured the church in Jerusalem had the authority to straighten out their differences, and that is what happened.
There are as many Christian Catholics, I suppose, as there are in any other denomination...meaning, not very many.
God bless you, Deb!

Catholics "are" Christians, but, they are misguided Christians.

They have idols in their Church. Any place, that has to have "symbolism" or something tangible to see and to hold, are lacking in FAITH!

They believe that they can do a lot of sinning, and always come to the Priest when they are going to take communion.

When you receive CHRIST, you "PUT ON CHRIST"!! It means your supposed to ACT like CHRIST! Not go sinning all the time and ask forgiveness all the time. Remember, if you make anyone stumble because of your ways, (what he percieves you doing and getting away with), then he may not even think much of Christianity and not even become a Christian!

You pray to Mary. Why? JESUS said that HE was the way, the truth, the only way to Heaven, not Saints or HIS Mother, or anyone else!

Saints... The Bible says that every CHRISTIAN IS A SAINT! There is nothing in the Bible about "Beautification", or any other pathways to become a Saint! EVERYONE WHO IS "SAVED" IS A SAINT!

Praying to Saints? Gimme a break!! JESUS is the only intercessor that you need!

I believe that Catholicism was founded in 360AD, at Constantinople. The King, wanted it to be a way to gather taxes on the people, (knowing that we were to give 10% to the Church), so, he made it a State Religion, so that he could get the monies.

The Bible came from scrolls. Those of the Apostles, have written, and handed down. That comprised the New Testament.

The old testament was scrolls handed down from Moses and other Prophets. Basically, its a collection of scrolls put together in book form, that was originally translated into Latin. I forget how many Prophets there were involved, in the writings at this time, I would have to go back into my notes and they are volumnous.

I wish you well..

Jesse

Born Catholic here.
Schooled by Nuns and Priests from K through 12.
Now a Christian.

The 1st century church worshipped according to the teachings handed down by the Apostles. They relied on verbal testimony of those men who were eye witnesses and participants to Jesus' ministry here on Earth.
Paul's Epistles, and the writers of the Gospels furthered Christ's teachings as the church spread and believers increased in numbers. With the church still "headquartered" in Jerusalem, James, Cephas (Peter) and John were considered the pillars of the church. (not Peter alone, because Peter was given the keys to the Kingdom of God, but not the keys to the Church. Jesus said He would build His church. [Cephas meaning a small stone, and the rock to which Jesus referred (Himself) was a monolith in comparison])

At a point even Peter shared the importance of following the scriptures, and not him.

The Vatican in Rome eventually began to rule the church, and proclaimed Papal infallibility on all subjects, and brought into question the scriptures which Peter said should be considered a "more sure word of prophecy."

Pope Urban II censured Galileo for teaching that the Earth revolved around the sun, rather than the other way around. Galileo's theory was eventually proven.
(So much for Papal infallibility.)

The bottom line is that Catholics follow the teachings of Jesus as filtered through the Vatican.
Christians follow Jesus as revealed in the scriptures alone.

Matrin Luther saw the inconsistencies among the Popes, and began the Reformation. The Catholic Church and the Christian Church share a common heritage, both tracing origins back to the Apostles and to Jesus. So both churches can proclaim themselves as "Christian."

Please consider reading "Fox's Book of Martyrs."
Rome hunted and martyred many Christians for their faith in Christ alone, because of their reluctance to adhere to Catholic Dogma and Papal leadership, choosing rather to rely on the leadership of Jesus.

to be honest the church I go to started in the book of Acts just as it says. We DO NOT claim to be Protestant because we started before the Niacin Counsel even exist. therefore ad nothing to protest against. the Oneness Apostolic church never changed of its doctrine.
we follow what peter preach in Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

I am a Christan I do not think the Catholic church is however not all that claim to be Christians are.

I am answering honestly I am not condemning anyone, you asked I answered.

The catholic church or the christian church? Because your question is a little confusing...

The catholic church was started in BC, while the Christian was in AD. Of course, hence the names of our time periods. The Bible was written by multitudes of people, all ordained by God to do so, and some even writing God's words directly. The New Testament of the Bible is based on Jesus, while the Old Testament merely prophesies his coming as God incarnate. This is why Christians and Catholics are not the same. They believe mostly in the Old Testament, while Christians believe mostly in the New.

But I am indifferent. I am merely stating fact. I don't care who's right and who's wrong. I just know the difference.

I would not claim that at all...I totally believe that any person that accepts Jesus as his/her savior and has accepted forgiveness given to us by Him is a Christian. We do not need to be divided over small differences. It makes me so sad to see petty arguments between Catholics and Protestants. Don't we have enough people against us? We should not fight amongst ourselves.
