I was on a flight that was diverted the other day, I am interested to know how much a diversion costs the airline.

airlines have a very precise hourly cost for every aircraft. it includes everything, from crew to fuel, maintainance and even the finacial cost of the aircraft.

They just time everything, and then they have the cost. Probably you should add only the landing fees at some airports.

I'd say for a case like you propose, lets say for arguments sake it is a Boeing 737, and it took 6 hours to arrange and retreive the normal path of the plane, it would probably be in the 60's thousand ballpark.

This is a TRUE Story
(I apologize but check spelling was not working and english is not my mother language)

It was a B-757 with around 200 passengers flying from central America to L.A. (Los Angeles USA)suddenly one passenger had a heart attack and the Pilot land on a Beach resort in MEXICO. Where that Airline doesn't have operations

I don't have the prices but you can calculate how much expenses were involved.

Before landing the pilot needs to dump some fuel to reach the landing weight, The Pilot felt and read the mannual recomemendation that, needs a mechanic to verify there were any dammage in the Airplane, He called the Airline headquarters and they were agree to make and inspection of the plane ( a quick walk by, for an authorized mechanic). But

It was 2:00 in the morning in a Mexican Airport where no Airline does maintenance to B-757, So... no mechanic

The passenger with the cardiac arrest was attended by the medical service and transported to a near Hospital and survive.

All the passengers went down the plane to the terminal, because there were no mechanics at that time and they estimate that next plane from a City where a mechanic can fly from , was about 5 hours from that time.

The Crew finish it's legal Flying hours in that period, so they need to rest at least 8 hours to keep on flying.

There where no Airline personal who can provide help, and answer the passengers questions. The Airline need to contact personal for another Mexican Airline and pay them overtime to attend all it's passenger needs.
list who can wait at least 8 hours in a Mexican beach resort with Hotel and meals included
Or to transfer the passengers that where in a hurry in connection flights between LA and that beach resort in Mexico at the first flight at 6:00 in the morning to Mexico City. (limited seats on that first flight)

I'll try to be short in my explanation (LOL)

the expenses

FUEL DUMPED
Airplane Landing/take off Fee
Airplane Parking Fee
PASSENGER TERMINAL TAX (for each passenger)
passenger Boarding systems (twice)
Transportation of an authorized mechanich
Transportation of Airline passenger Supervisors
Traffic and operations personal (overtime)
Transportation to the HOTEL (2 ways)
HOTEL reservations
Crew (overtime)
meals for all passengers
Airplane delay ,affecting all the connections of all the passengers where that plane supposed to keep on flying, paying meals to the passengers on that other Airports.
and more...

Not enough data to compute the cost. How far is the divert? How much ground time? Room and board for the passengers if they must stay overnight? Rescheduling flights? Cancelled flight? There is a myriad of questions in order to derive a single answer.
