Can I use those tiny locks people use for their luggage, or should I buy a combination masterlock that people use at gym lockers?

Use one of those combination locks. Suitcase locks can be picked very easily. You might find all of your stuff gone!

Sad but true a lock only keeps the honest person out of things.
You can buy the most expense lock in the world, and the thief well know how to open.
And you have to remember many suit
cases have very good locks, and the person just takes a knife and cut the bag open on the side.
Very few suitcase have a metal side, very easy to open.

Put a lock on, but don't spend a lot, for it well only stop very few.

When I went to Europe my best friend and I both took just those little locks to lock the zipper closed, but then we brought those bike locks so we would put it through the handles and lock it to the bed.

Honestly, we rarely used our locks and our stuff was never stolen or messed with. Maybe we were just lucky? A good rule is to carry your valuables on you... or not bring any with you. Your most important item when traveling abroad is your Passport anyways. Just be smart.
