NO! It is degrading and humiliating for a child and could cause emotional trauma.
There is a place for time out but it is as a last resort for managing specific difficult behaviours. Time out should not be used as part of your overall strategies for classroom management.
Time away is a better option - remove the child from the activity where the behaviour has occurred and place them at another activity.
1. Give a reason eg: "if you throw the sand it will go in someone's eyes."
2. Give a warning eg: "If you throw the sand again you will have to move away"
3 Follow through. "You have to move away now. You can come back when you are ready to stop throwing the sand"
4 Dont give in. Set a time (usually 1 minute per year, ie five minutes for a five year old) and make sure they dont return before the time is up.
5. Repeat 1 & 2 when they return.

Yes. I worked in preschool for 3 years. However, there are limitations from the state on this subject. The child may be put in "time out" for no longer than 1 minute per year of age AND must be put there with a toy.

Yes, and the age of the child should determine how long the time out should be. Some kids need a time out desperatley just to get a chance to sit in a quiet spot for a few minutes. This really helps kids that become too stimulated and start acting out for that reason.

Yes , preschoolers aren't too young to have time out, if a child has broken a rule they need to know there will be consequences, time out gives a child time to settle down and think about what they have done wrong.

Yes. 3 and 4 year old kids know when they have done something wrong (usually). I seat the child in a place away from distraction. Then, I ask the child, "Do you know why you are in time out?" I let them tell me. If they dont know, I tell them. Sometimes kids just need to chill because they are overstimulated. Time out is good if used correctly. Always ALWAYS use a timer. One minute for each year (3 yo 3 mins etc)

Only if this form of dicipline is used in the home, it is important that parents/carers work together when disciplining a child in a pre school placement. Many teachers may abuse timeout by using it to much, and anyway children should me made to feel included not excluded.

Yes kids at that age need a spot to take a break! Maybe they could call it something diffrent like "take a break chair" Or the "Think abou it chair" Time out sounds kinda harsh to little kids
