Does our need to express our opinions against such questions and those who ask them negate the level of self service in doing so, since we get points by answering them, or are does it not? Would it be better to just report but otherwise ignore them?

Sorry about typos.

I guess I would say no. But it would still be better just to report them. People are not going to change their opinions no matter what you say.

A fast "reported abuse, moved on" lets others see that it's been flagged for action by Yahoo, allows you to (whisper....get points, but that's point-gaming, and violates community guidelines, which is a no-no; see the rules!) note your opinion briefly, AND also warns off other people that no response is necessary.

In my opinion, overt trolls (the most outrageously offensive ones) thrive on reactions, so getting one or two RAMOs and NO other responses would have to be terribly depressing for them. Imagine having a public tantrum....and NO ONE caring!

I occasionally respond to controversial questions and commentaries if they indicate some degree of careful thinking out and a wish for idea interchange, rather than just a desire to start an offensive battle.

Those people come and go. They will forever exist. But, rarely go past level 1 anyway.
If we encourage this behaviour the worse this place will become. Answering at lenght to them it's not a deterrance but a magnet for attention they may not get in the real world.

Oh, My! Someone who thinks as I do. I so often have to debate with myself whether to answer them or not. I try to find those who seem to be sincerely (or at least, more sincerely) looking for an answer - sometimes - before answering. Truly, answering for the sake of a couple of points, or to just "make a point" would be "improper", wouldn't it?

i think this type of question? should be censored and the person that posted it banned from posting any more of this filth, or bigotry. there was a question the other day about how to make drugs, what next how to make bombs? as anne Robinson would say " dump the dickheads"

Racism, bigotry, and hatefulness should always be challenged. Just letting it go tells someone being nasty that we'll turn away and let them get away with their BS. Not me - my mouth's too big for that!! :-D

I just told one that if he wants to waste his points asking stupid questions I'm going to take points telling him his question is stupid...looks like a win-win to me.

Don't dignify them with a reply, but report them.
