A year ago I decided to experiment on my house. We got rid of cable at home [GASP!]

Honestly its worked out great, but now the year is over. My friends tell me I should get cable so the kids can keep up with what their friends are talking about.

Some good opinions?

In a way I miss some of the good shows [mmmmm ER!!!] but I like it this way. We watch movies still and play video games but I think its great for the kids since they don't get all messed if they miss their favorite show! They read a lot more and do more crafts and play outside with their friends. I want to hear the other side of it since I'm biased :P

Well it's been a year and you have all adjusted, so it seems that cable isn't really needed. If you want your kids to keep up on current events, there are other ways besides watching TV to do that. You also mentioned they read, subscribing or getting a newspaper is one of the ways they can keep up with current events to discuss with their friends. (of course, if they aren't following shows and cartoons, they would need TV to do that). Another way is the Internet.

Do your kids complain about not having Cable? If they don't, and you don't, why would you listen to what others say about you having to get it now? You've done without it for a year, and if there are no complaints, keep it off. If your having fun entertaining yourselves in other ways, no need to have cable in the house.

Personally, I would suffer without my TV for awhile, but since you have done it for a year, your already past that suffering point.

I have 4 kids and there is no cable at my house. Only one is in school, but he always has time for his homework and enjoys playing outside. The other 3 are ages 3-2-1 and they don't even know what cable is. My sister has 4 kids 3 in school and they have cable, bad grades and don't play outside hardly. (Yes, I know some of it is how you parent.) Your kids are getting out in the fresh air and playing with other kids-way better than them sitting in front of the TV or freaking out if they miss a show.

There's nothing wrong with not having cable. I bet your kids are more relaxed and healthy, too!
If your kids can still watch movies and play video games, then they still have lots to talk to their friends about.
I couldn't afford cable for a few months, and I was very bored at first, but then I found much better things to do with my time. Now that the cable is back on, I still don't watch it as much as I used to.

we've been years without cable. no biggie. my kids ages 14, 13, 11 and 5 have been well adjusted to no cable we watch movies. they actually get into many of the old time TV shows like Gilligan's island and Laverne and Shirley on DVD.(better watching too).

Saves money. Why introduce so many more channels of nothing on? you can always have a friend tape or record the shows you like or rent them when they come on dvd.

You have to decide if you and your family find it a necessity, if you have managed a whole year without it then you don't need it, there are things more important than the latest TV show. I have cable in my house because I live abroad and it's the only way for me to get English speaking channels.

I have NEVER had cable. Just the straight channels that come naturally. and I don't really feel llike i've missed out. I get all the important shows like grey's anatomy and stuff, but other than that, i'm not the worse for it. Besides, who cares if they watch all the popular shows. Most of them aren't worth watching anyway.

Not only is cable good but its great. You are able to block channels you do not want your kids seeing. There are some wondersful programs for kids via cable...The Discovery Channel for one. I LOVE this channel...it is a learning channel, they have disney and family channels as well. I would be lost without my cable but I am a tv/movie freak but the bottomline is cable tv has a lot to offer besides smut and bullsh*t.

My friend recently purchased a big screen TV (52 inches I think), I came over to his house and he was watching Public Broadcasting with static. It's just plain wrong. On the other hand, I hardly ever watch TV, The PC has taken over my entertainment center, because it can do everything that an entertainment center can do and more.

I get 5 channels plus cable is over rated, 600 buck is enough for a weekend vacation.

Being a prisoneer in your own home due to cable sucks.

keeping up with what their friends are watching is NOT a reason to get cable. actually as far as I'm concerned that would be reason #2 to not get it again.

Reason #1 more family time not being wasted in front of the box.
