It also seems kind of strange to me that god held Adam and Eve responsible for doing the 'wrong thing' (eating the forbidden fruit) BEFORE they were capable of distinguishing right from wrong (AFTER they ate the forbidden fruit).
I sure hope that god fired his continuity editor... or whatever else he might do to someone who pisses him off. or fails to live up to his expectations.

God is not a man that he should lie! They did die, just not immediately. They would likely have lived a life of ease forever in the garden had they not disobeyed. The death sentence they earned goes for all of mankind. We all die. However, there is life after death. What it will be like for you is up to you. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. If you choose him you will live in eternal peace after death. If not, you will go to a place that is eternal torment and was not meant for you.
Edit: as for the answerer who said God died because they did not die the day they ate the fruit, a thousand years with the Lord is but a day. Look it up. Therefore, Adam did die in the day he ate the fruit.
Seek God's love, not contradictions. You are not capable of understanding the creator. You are his creation. He is sorverign. Nothing you can do about that. However, he is a God of undying love and generosity. He made a way of escape for you. Take it.

God lied, because when they ate it they did not die. Adam lived for over 900 years afterwards.
Genesis. 2:17: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

He got a lot of things wrong for an all knowing god.
Adam will die on THE DAY that he eats from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.Genesis 2:17
But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Adam eats from the tree, yet lives another 930 years. Genesis 3:6 Genesis 5:5
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food ... she took of the fruit therof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

God put Adam and Eve into Eden for two reasons:
(1) So they could see the benefits (if you will) of following His will for their lives and living the lifestyle He originally planned and
(2) The choice of whether to follow God or satan had to be finally decided once and for all. This we see later on with Job as well. What drives a person to reject God and His Blessings?
The "death" described IS NOT literal death! it's death that comes from always from on as Paul later says being torn between the things I know I should not do and am always so eager to do anyway and knowing the things I should do eagerly and not wanting to ever do at all.
They were banished actually for their own good - imagine if there was no human death - Hitler would live forever for instance.
Would you want to get older each day, pains increase, year after year you watch close friends and family suffer in perhaps incurable pain crying, begging for peace a death anything and it never ever comes?
If satan (remember the snake didn't itself talk it was satan's voice amplified through the snake) told the truth then why did Jesus later on say satan was the father of lies so when he decieves he was being honest with his nature?
Why would God ever hide? You ever see one Bible passage where He ever did?
You sure of your Bible "facts"?
Ever notice how people always complicate God?
Ever think His ways are not yours and neither are His thoughts. Or who can know the mind of God?
And who are you to judge Him anyway?

God did not lie. He said this to them: "And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."
They ate of the tree and what happened? That very day, their bodies started to deteriorate and die. They lost their perfection and were classed as sinners against God.
Remember also, that God's time frame is much different than ours. A thousand years is like one day to him. These Scriptures help us to see that:
Psalm 90:4: "For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night."
2 Peter 3:8: "But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."
Adam lived to be 130 years old, so he did die within what God considered to be a day.
Satan lied and told Eve that neither she nor Adam would die, but they did. He deceived mankind then and he is still doing so.
Soon, Satan and his demons will be destoyed forever and will deceive mankind no more.

Poor Jews! Maybe they say they believe whatever this god says so he doesn't lose his temper (again) and kill everyone!
The death part. That is plain English but it is not the only time he lies. There's also a verse in the Moses v. Pharaoh story where the Bible records God as saying 'I will harden Pharaoh's heart...' Also, I always questioned how Eve was supposed to know who was 'good' or 'evil' to obey before the tree, God or a talking snake...OR did she even know what death was...how could she think it was a bad thing if she wasn't even aware of what bad was

What God said was, For in the day you eat of the fruit you will die. A day has different meanings. A day is like a thousand years to God. Adam did die before the thousand years were up. God is not a liar. You have him confused with Satan, who by the way is the Father of all lies. God kept his word. Adam did indeed die.

“In the day of thy eating thereof, die surely shalt thou.” The divine command is accompanied with its awful sanction - death. The man could not at this time have any practical knowledge of the physical dissolution called death. We must, therefore, suppose either that God made him preternaturally acquainted with it, or that he conveyed to him the knowledge of it simply as the negation of life. The latter hypothesis is to be preferred, for several reasons. First, it is the more economical mode of instruction. Such knowledge may be imparted to man without anticipating experience. He was already conscious of life as a pure blessing. He was therefore capable of forming an idea of its loss. And death in the physical sense of the cessation of animal life and the disorganization of the body, he would come to understand in due time by experience. Secondly, death in reference to man is regarded in Scripture much more as the privation of life in the sense of a state of favor with God and consequent happiness than as the mere cessation of animal life Gen_28:13; Exo_3:6; Mat_22:32. Thirdly, the presence and privilege of the tree of life would enable man to see how easily he could be deprived of life, especially when he began to drink in its life-sustaining juices and feel the flow of vitality rushing through his veins and refreshing his whole physical nature. Take away this tree, and with all the other resources of nature he cannot but eventually droop and die. Fourthly, the man would thus regard his exclusion from the tree of life as the earnest of the sentence which would come to its fullness, when the animal frame would at length sink down under the wear and tear of life like the beasts that perish. Then would ensue to the dead but perpetually existing soul of man the total privation of all the sweets of life, and the experience of all the ills of penal death."
God does not, and cannot lie. They died spiritually and eventually died physically. Both was brought about by their disobedience.
