When you're home you need to keep him in the room with you while you're re-training him so you can keep an eye on him. When you take him out, you need to go out with him, tell him "go pee" (or whatever you choose to say) and the very second he goes, give him lots and lots of praise then come right back in. This way he learns to differentiate between play time outside and potty time.
Dogs learn much faster through positive reinforcement and by not giving him the chance to make mistakes, you don't need to correct him. You'll have to keep him in a crate when you're not home until he's become reliable.

There could be multiple issues at work. You may have done this already, but make sure he doesn't have any physiological issues such as worms. If the poop is solid doesn't appear to have blood or any other abnormalities, it is most likely a behavioral issue. The two easiest fixes are: 1. Give him a treat and/or praise him EVERY time he goes to the bathroom outside. 2. Crate him during the day and when he is not under your direct supervision. Crating is completely comfortable for dogs once they are accustomed to it and it is not a punishment at all. Do make sure the crate is small enough so he can't go to the bathroom in the corner and then walk to the other side of the cage to get away from it. Dogs are less likely to use the bathroom in their own crates. Crating doesn't have to be permanent. You can start with the crate and once you've had success with that, move on to shutting him in one room. If he's successfull at that and you want to, you can move to the whole house, or one floor or whatever. At any point, if he begins to have problems again, you take a step back until he doesn't go in the house any more.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aL1QE
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

My friend got a house broken 4 year old pitt bull from a shelter and he went in the house for about 2 weeks. I think its just that the dog is scared...I mean there in a new place where they have never been. Give him some time and if he keeps doing it punish him....tap his nose and/or bum and show him what he did and sternly say no. ( if you say it nicely he wont understand and he will think he is being praised ) Good luck.

Exactly the same way as you would a puppy but for the love of god dont use pee pads or you wont live long enough to toilet train it. Your grandkids will be doing it. Those things really confuse the dog. If you are consistant with the outside only stuff it shouldnt take any longer than training a puppy.

How about training him to use the bathroom outside that way you don't have accidents in your house. When he does use the bathroom on the floor take him and show him that it's wrong. Let your dog know that he's not allowed to use it on the floor but to go outside. Keep trying this everyday and pretty soon he'll get the idea. It worked on my dog.

If he seems to be going exsessivly or more than twice a day it would probably be a good idea to put him on a better food,I feed my pug Nutro brand mini bites (its in a light green bag and has a collie on it) its about $8.00 a bag and seems to really help. There is not as many fillers in it and alot of times its the food that has lots of fillers in it that will cause your dog to have to poopy alot. You also will probably notice that he will eat less of it at eating times because it is much more dense than cheaper foods and fills them up quicker. Hope this helps.

Do not feed him so late in the day. Only at noon, and all he can eat. Then, walk him several times afterwards. :) He's just got to go and there is no way a small dog can hold it as well as a large dog.

Crate training is a good idea. They tend to not crap where they have to stay. Change his feeding schedule and spank his little butt when he does it with a newspaper. The sound will scare him more than it will hurt. After you spank him and show it to him, put him immediately outside and tell him the same commands over and over. constancy is the key.

Keep him on a leash in thehouse with you so you know what he is doing at all times. If he is doing it when you are gone get him a crate.
