I know that legally you cannot drive faster than the posted speed limit. But, until when? I've heard that the sign is valid for one mile. I've heard that the sign is valid until there is another sign. Does the sign become invalid when you drive from one county into another, or one town into another? What's the story?

if no sign then the limit is 55 mph, unless otherwise posted.

The speed limit is effective from the instant you reach the sign until the instant you reach another sign with a different speed limit. And if they want to be really technical, they can ticket you as soon as you pass the sign.

right here in NYS / NYC, each and every velocity cut back sign has velocity cut back selection. the explanation is that each and each style of street (HWY, community, etc.) had a default velocity cut back (and drivers are think to comprehend what it is - which we don't). And the cost cut back signs and warning signs are often place there because of the fact it is a deviation from the default. Or each and every so often it is place there as a reminder (because of the fact we don't keep in mind). So the numbers are continuously on the sign. that's speaking for NYC / NYS. === word to poster under: NYS has sixty 5 as maximum velocity cut back.

They use those numbers to create the minimum speed for which the traffic can flow. They assume that about 2/3 of the drivers will exceed that number regardless of how big they make it.

What ever speed you see on the sign then that is what it is on that road you are on.Until you see otherwise posted or a Officer tells you different.
