I have a medium sized dog, and my husband holds her and I trim but I always either make her bleed or don't get them short enough..

Look at the quick of the nail. Be sure not to cut back into the quick. If you are afraid to cut too short, cut a little off and then do this again in a week. You can get a dremel, and grind her nails as well. Play with her paws so that she gets used to you handling them, like when she is lying down next to you. This way she doesn't freak out too much when it comes time to cut them.

If you're using a pair of proper nail trimmers, line them up so they're flat in relation to the pads if your dog has clear nails it's a bit easier to see where the quick ends and the nail begins, cut the nail so that there is no overhang when she has her feet on the floor. If you cut them flat to the pad you should have enough nail below the quick but not too much to impede her normal gait.

Trim just the tips, and gradually the "quick" (the part that bleeds) will start to retreat from the edge of the nail, and you can start to trim them shorter. Just trim a little bit more every week or so.
Hope this helps!

I hate doing my dogs nails. I tried forever but like you just made her bleed. For a while I would clip them long then file them with an emory board, but this got to be too time consuming and I found out my vet only charges $15 to do it so that is what I do now. The emory board does work if you don't want to go to the vet though.

If you cut too far it will bleed. Talk with the vet about the proper place for your particular dog. Our vet only charges about $3.00 to trim nails.

my chihuahua gets scared me trimming his nails, so I only do like two a day, but as far as how short, just cut the tips off, it should be short enough to where you don't hear their nails on the floor at all, but if you can't see the blood line, just cut the very tips but do it every week

I find if I trim them just a little about once a week, it keeps them from getting too long without cutting too far. I have a 75-pound Golden Retriever, if you're wondering.

Take her to a dog place and pay them to do it, it doesn't matter about the cost cause it will probably be $15 at the highest. STOP hurting your dog!
