My 4 year old tells me that that he doesn't want to go to preschool b/c he has no friends. His teacher tells me that he plays with all the kids and when my mother in law picks him up he is playing with the other kids. Is this a sympathy ploy?

Yeah, pretty much. Or it may just be he's having trouble remembering! My son is 4 and does the same thing -- to hear him talk, he spends most of his days all by himself, staring at the wall! I don't know exactly why they do it; but if you see him doing something in particular or playing with someone when you come to pick him up, start asking him about his day with, "I saw you were playing with so-and-so; what were you playing?" Then work backwards: "Well, what did you do before that? What did you eat for lunch? What happened before that?" For some reason, a lot of kids have a lot easier time remembering their day if they think backwards from the time you picked them up.

Sounds like it might be! Give it time! It will all fall into place! He will probably be invited to birthday parties and get togethers after school. Or maybe you can ask the teacher who he seems to get along with and you can arrange a play date or lunch at mcdonalds.

Kids at that age just want to be able to make a decision. Your 4 year old will be fine I think it is something that they go through.

Sounds to me like he may miss you a bit..try spending a little more time with him and maybe set up a play date on weekend with a few of his classmates.

Yeah, I think he is just trying to get your attention. Give him a little extra, and he'll be fine. He's probably feeling a little pushed aside.
