I think that a certain percentage of people might fall into this category. Sometimes it can be hard to have enough faith to actually believe. Sometimes I think about it, and if I were to go to the side of Athieism, and recognized no eternal consequences for actions I might possibly do things that society might consider bad. I like to think of the way I try to live as erring to the side of caution. If I live my life as if there is a god, and heaven and all that is promised in my religion, then I will have a greater tendancy to serve my fellow man, and avoid selfish pleasures. I get the reputation among my peers that I behave "Christlike." Conversely if I live like there is no accountability it might all become about me. I figure what do I lose other than some guilty pleasures by assuming that there is eternal accountability? I get the good feeling of being selfless, and my peers recognize my good works, and I get to ride this wave until death. If there is afterlife I reap the rewards there, and if there is no afterlife than I don't know about it at that point anyway, so who cares? Err to the side of caution!!

Yes, in a way. There are hundreds of gods in mythology, and essentially everyone thinks that most of them are just myths. Some people think that one is real, some people think that none are real.

Those who think that one is real have some reason for thinking the others are just myths. It's incumbent on them to justify not thinking that about the one they believe is real.

The rest of us (who believe they're all myths) don't need to take that last step.

Later: I think it's hilarious that "zero" refers to atheism as the path of least resistance. That's of course exactly backwards: accepting the majority religious belief, which is probably that of your parents as well, and doesn't ask you to think too much or set high moral standards - that's the path of least resistance.

Atheism takes effort, character, and quite a bit of thought. Not many are capable of it.

No, I believe that it is true that everyone knows that there is a God... but many fear the truth that comes from a living God of judgement and chose the path of least resistance through life. The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.
